@featateatn@kolektiva.social @rossbright@mastodonapp.uk It's also hard to escape the idea that fundamentally, all politics has become reduced to where people stand on taxation. If tax is always - automatically, and without exception - a bad thing, then all other issues of policy (and any individual politician) are judged according to whether they can reduce it. Politics is then not about social justice or the national interest any more, but about yourself and the retention of your own wealth.

Is it that when they see something going bad, they feel the need to somehow capitalism harder to make it better? "The UK's infrastructure is awful - so let's defund it more." Or "The UK suffers from chronically bad productivity and wage growth, so let's supress demand with austerity and cut off trade with our nearest neighbour." ?

@crystalenka@fosstodon.org BTW a cash savings account is ALSO a good idea of course! But only really as an emergency fund (eg I keep maybe 3 months living costs in an easy access savings account). Average inflation is about 3%, so you need to be getting interest at 3% or more on long-term savings just to keep it the same value. It utterly sucks and I hate it, but the best chance we have of a decent retirement is to gamble our savings in the markets, ugh.

But say you're saving $100 a month: that $100 will be buying more units each month as markets go down (what you are buying each month gets cheaper). So hope for a total meltdown (as long as you can earn money to save)! 😂 The longer the markets go down, the better for you. Then when you retire, you hope the market goes *up* (hopefully!) so that all those cheap units you bought in the past can sell at a high price for you to live off.
