I think you're right about reasons for some, but let's remember there's a vast media machine with vested interests that is supporting them. It seems to me that narrative plays on fear, and with collapsing real earnings and uncertain heath provision people have a lot to be worried about. It's a pretty dystopian thought I'm afraid, but the more people are struggling to make ends meet or worrying about providing for their families, the easier it is to pedal conservative narratives of low cost/small state approaches.
