Price of Experience Can Come With a Sting. By Stephen Macaulay
There was probably a large number of people who traveled back to LA from the Empire Polo Club on Sunday April 19 or the morning of the 20th hacking and blistering. The second weekend of Coachella had a “Windblown Dust Advisory” because there were gusts of 25 mph kicking up the terrain on the 1,000-acre site that finished up its winter polo season in March....

Threefer Thursday: Some Acoustic Hits from The Cure. By Mike V
Robert Smith of The Cure celebrated a birthday this past Tuesday! Born on April 21st, 1959. He’s 67 years young now. So many great songs and albums. 14 studio records since 1979’s Three Imaginary Boys, with 2024’s Songs of a Los World being the most recent.
I got to see The Cure live on their summer tour in 2023, and it was outstanding....

No Kidding. By Stephen Macaulay
Waffle House Legend Award winner, 2020, Kid Rock has had quite a career that has been on the downward slide since about 2011.
In 1998 his Devil Without a Cause album sold 14 million units. His next studio album, Cocky, released in 2001, was taken up 5.7 million times. And after that came the self-titled Kid Rock, which had an 82% decline in sales to 1 million.
But still, a million is a non-trivial number....

Erykah Badu was discovered and signed when she was opening for a young D’Angelo in 1994. She is a critical artist in the development of what is known as neo-soul or progressive soul, which draws its lineage from the soul music of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and other soul artists in the 70s....

My Vinyl Solution: Listening to Records
Twenty years ago I gave away all my records to a pal. I actually kept about fifty, mostly stuff that was sentimental to me in some way. Oh, and I kept all my 45s. But I got rid of my LPs. Why? A couple of main reasons: I was sick of moving them, and I wasn't listening to them.
I'd been accumulating records all my life. But my wife and I moved around a lot....

Back Out of the Saddle
On July 29, 1999, at the Disney-MGM Studios theme park in Florida, the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith opened to the public. While you waited in line to climb into the limo-like ride cars you heard various tunes, like “Just Push Play.” Depending on what vehicle you got into you would hear “Nine Lives,” “Love in an Elevator,” “Young Lust,” “F.I.N.E.,” “Back in the Saddle,” or, what seems to be the least Disneyesque cut of all, “Dude…

Threefer Thursday: All On A Mardis Gras Day
New Orleans. Where it all began. Musical ground zero for America. Where the American approach to music came to be defined by personalization, interpretation, and improvisation - definitively unique American musical elements. It’s part of why we have such a diverse array of musical styles, traditions, and genres in these United States. The Blues started in New Orleans. Jazz started in New Orleans.

The guitars alternately ringing and screaming behind two voices that would define an entire sub-genre of music and spawn a million bands.

Battle of the Bands
“And right now. . .right now. . .right now it’s time to. . .kick out the jams, motherfuckers!” --MC5, “Kick Out the Jams” (1969) In photographs of and posters for the MC5 the American flag is rather prominent, as it was in the band’s performances. Wayne Kramer’s guitar has the Stars and Stripes as a motif. The MC5 was sometimes referred to as the “house band” for the White Panther Party.

Twenty-Five Years: How’d That Happen?
Twenty-five years. What the fuck? Time flies. It's a cliche but it's true. The older you get, the faster it goes. You blink and you're old. I was still in my twenties when we started this thing. Threefer Thursday: Symphonic PFunk at the Detroit Opera House
Funk is a style of music that can move you to the core of your being if you let it. It’s got groove, it’s musically sophisticated, it feels good, and it embodies a certain kind of musical hope for the future. James Brown and Pee Wee Ellis invented modern funk music with 1967’s "Cold Sweat." Later, Bootsy Collins joined the James Brown band and Brown introduced him to the concept of…

Tune in, Turn on, Unsubscribe
There’s a minor cultural movement right now where the kids are throwing it back to 2016, back to when they were...kids. It seems nobody is particular happy to be in 2026 and nostalgia has some longing for a time a decade past for solace. Now, 2016 was not such a great year for me. The Seattle Sounders won MLS Cup that season, just one year after my beloved Portland Timbers (first in Cascadia!).

A History of Violence
On August 7, 1964, the “Gulf of Tonkin Resolution” was signed into law by Lyndon B. Johnson. The reasons for the passage were because on August 2 a destroyer, the USS Maddox, was attacked by North Vietnamese torpedo boats, then, on August 4, that ship was again attacked along with another, the USS Turner Joy, although the second incident was later discovered, thanks to the release of the Pentagon Papers (officially: “History of U.S.
