People just aren’t built to give the required level of comprehensive review. Our brains don’t work that way. At this point I’m starting to accept that I have to start producing slop and give up caring or my health’s going to go. Maybe LLMs are one solution to the Great Filter

These should just be anxiety predictions. But it whenever I start asking myself how I’d maximise both anti-social behaviour from the asset owning class and potential for gaslighting, it turns out to be a pretty good predictor for the last decade. To be fair I was off with the oil prices not finally blowing and the straight being temporarily re-opened, even if that conflict has flared up again now. So… that’s probably just going to sidle along in the background and do the whole frog boiling thing.

Anxiety prediction that will inevitably turn out to be true:

Apart from the safety issues, and the privacy issues, and so many other issues, self driving cars are likely to be plentiful in places with existing public transport systems and next to non existent elsewhere. This is because these are the places that will make money, the way private postal providers and Internet providers have to be strong armed into serving rural or impoverished areas (usually with limited success).

In this way they’ll have the effect of giving people an excuse to defund public transport, while at the same time giving the tech bros another can’t-fail political lever and cash cow due to ever tightening binding of private interest to our physical logistics.

There may be a world where self driving cars are pro-social, but like every other solution designed by a tech bro the current iteration will be rotten from the ground up and would need to be completely rethought.

A certain individual performing a taboo salute is a good example of what happens when you don’t have a force to just fiat remove people who talk a good game but are obviously testing boundaries.

Now granted that you’re right and that gives a lot of power to the people who get to decide what is and isn’t crazy. But we seem to have culturally abdicated that role, allowing the crazy people to step in as the only ones willing to fill it.

I think one of the reasons LLMs set off my autism is that they _undermine_ humanity’s big super power: cooperation.

The “rugged individualist” types and “great men” hate this, but right from the start cooperation is what’s allowed us to build a society of staggering complexity.

One of the core components of cooperation is effective mechanisms for building trust.

Previously, bypassing those mechanisms was possible but took some effort and expertise. Now, even a small LLM can bypass those trust mechanisms at close to zero cost.

And anything with close to zero cost becomes ubiquitous.

We’re not entering the age of intelligence, we’re entering the age of deception.

Social policies have been allowed to become more progressive while fiscal policies have slowly become more and more extremely regressive. So now things are boiling over and of course the social progress is a ripe scape goat, while the slow boil march of financialisation, deregulation and austerity which has been quietly rotting our foundations is easily shuffled under the Westminster carpet.

One of the things I’ve never successfully internalised is how basically our entire society and my personal future in the form of savings and pensions is based on gambling and abject speculation.

At this point it’s pretty clear that the stock market is completely detached from reality and driven by vibes. Most of our pensions depend on the fantasy that FAANG type stocks can and will continue to grow forever. Hell we even have “prediction markets” which are obviously just betting shops dodging regulation by self-identifying as financial products.

We have billionaires talking about destroying 50% of all white collar jobs and the establishment is cheering. They talk about UBI while at the same time it’s been made obvious that any redistribution of wealth will need to be over their cold, dead bodies (not endorsing violence, just a figure of speech).

I truly miss the times when people at least pretended that “freedom” wasn’t just about speculation and corruption.

@munin Idunno This despair bought to you by the same human nature that created hits such as “if people had a basic sense of the psychologically potent nature of marketing then they’d also have an antagonistic relationship with advertisements but the perception of invulnerability is too strong”. But I’m also saying that that clustered network is a feature rather than a bug, and people trained by big networks to think of them all as one place may be misinterpreting that. Or in other words, people on the internet are always going to be awful. But the clustering on the fediverse gives a greater opportunity to create non awful sub-networks.
