Attorney General, Michelle Rowland MP issued a press release yesterday in relation to rapidly growing community concern over smart glasses and has asked the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner to investigate. Hopefully, the OAIC will not only identify the risks and harms of smart glasses when used improperly but will identify positive and lawful use cases as well. The answer will not lie necessarily in a change to the Privacy Act, but will most likely depend upon making substantive changes to the patchwork of Australia's legacy State and Territory surveillance device legislation. EFA looks forward to the OIAC investigation but we hope it does not proceed at a glacial pace as some of their more complex investigations seem to have taken historically. Demand #KmartAustralia take the Anko surveillance glasses off the shelf. Non-consensual surveillance should not be normalised. Kmart does not need a change in the law to act. Retailers withdraw products routinely. Sign the petition asking Kmart Group Managing Director Aleksandra Spaseska to withdraw the Anko camera glasses from Kmart stores and from the website. We know that fixing this problem requires more than a product recall – we need greater privacy laws to protect us.
