@stevendotjs@hachyderm.io @tante@tldr.nettime.org Thanks, and I'll look forward to more articles. As far as retiring, I can't claim any any special foresight; it was just the right time to leave for various reasons. Without at all realizing it at the time, I just happened to be in the industry at a time when software devs had substantial power versus management, if we chose to use it. It was much closer to retirement, and more-so in the years since, that I started to realize that was historically unusual, and changing rapidly for the worse in software. Every now and then I read articles by a couple software dev bloggers I trust who are, I think, looking carefully at *how* to use LLMs in a way that might (just maybe) set devs up to be "centaurs", ie the drivers of technology, versus Doctorow's "reverse-centaurs", ie, meat-puppets directed by the system a la Amazon drivers. I don't have any particular faith that those can be achieved in any broad sense in the current context of the industry, though...

@stevendotjs@hachyderm.io @tante@tldr.nettime.org Great article... I checked out out the link and the pckt.blog page mentioned there but I only saw this article: I'd love to read more of your writing, either past or future. I started work as a full-time software dev in 1988 (or a few years earlier if you count summer jobs), and I was lucky enough to enjoy it pretty much through to retirement a few years ago, right around the first chatgpt release. One of the parts I found most personally fulfilling was mentoring younger devs (which definitely included me learning from them and them challenging my old-guy reflexes) and to see what's happened in the very few years since is profoundly discouraging... And thanks for @tante@tldr.nettime.org for forwarding this...

@spook@pleroma.m68k.church You might enjoy _The Little Lisper_ or it's more recent variant _The Little Schemer_. They're short, and aren't going to help you much with practical programming tasks, but the initial chapters do work you through the basics quite quickly, and near the end to work up to Also, it's a *long* time since I've read Paul Graham's _On Lisp_ (since before it's been clear that Graham is a wanna-be tech bro), but it gives a good introduction to lisp macros, which are perhaps the part of the language that most defines lisp and the lisp "style". Neither of these are going to teach you how to get useful stuff down now with a real lisp implementation, though, so if that's your goal, there are almost certainly better sources.

@art3starr@mastodon.social @mastorey@mastodon.acm.org Just read the blog article you point to here, and it's very interesting.. The idea of troubleshooting time as a direct representation of the growing complexity of software is very interesting, and at least for me, it aligns well with my personal experience. One of the metaphors I've used, at least in my own mind, is the notion of software being "under my control", and although I doubt I ever attempted to give it a precise definition, I think it relates closely to the idea that whatever software I'm talking about doesn't give me many surprises in it's behaviour.

@crowgirl@hachyderm.io I haven't read all the comments here or on Reddit, and the focus is clearly on lvm issues which I can't comment on, but here are some thoughts:

  • Is the nvme device removable? (I presume so, but who knows.) If so, you might consider removing it until you get your computer back up and running with no risk of the install process messing up the nvme drive.

The following seem to me less likely to be relevant, but I thought I'd mention them.

  • Also, you can get m.2 nvme enclosures from ugreen on Amazon for not too much money that with allow you to plug in the drive via usb at up to 10Gb/s. I mention this because it would avoid having to open up your machine to install the nvme drive during the recovery process, so just a but less messing around.

  • I suggest making a full block level copy of the nvme drive that way if something goes wrong during recovery you should be able to recreate it and try again. The nvme enclosure mentioned above could make that slightly more convenient.

@ericwastl@hachyderm.io I really appreciate the immense amount of work you've put into AoC over the years. I've only been participating for the past three years or so, but I've really enjoyed it each time. I guess I'll be somewhat nostalgic about the longer 25-day contests, but your reasons for the change make perfect sense, and I have to admit that the 25 day run was pretty tiring by the end.

@BrianBinh@dice.camp @bluedragon@masto.yttrx.com This is hilarious; thanks for posting. And, of course everything on the intertubes is true, but in spite of that I did a bit of googling for references and found this page at wiktionary: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/-ard#Middle_English Apparently, in dictionary-speak, what -ard does is form "pejorative agent nouns", which is what you said but not as funny. On the same page, the section for "English" has more examples of -ard words..
