This expectation is driven by the news that current and planned production of computer storage is being pre-purchased by massive AI data centers, thus decreasing supply for everyone else. Most Fediverse instances have some way to solicit donations, and if you can afford to do so, please donate. Better yet, set up an ongoing subscription if your instance provides that. You can also help defray costs. Do you really need your posts with their included multimedia to stay forever? If not, (and I bet for most of us the answer really is no,) many Fediverse offerings such as Mastodon include settings you can use to have your posts “expire” after a period of time so that your account does not need ever increasing storage.

@Shrigglepuss@godforsaken.website It seems to be following in the footsteps of Internet advertising. I don’t know anyone who likes all those ads getting between them and what they were trying to see. And from what I have read, it appears that the usefulness to the products and services people are trying to sell (at least the legitimate ones) is little to none. So the only people actually benefiting from the ads are those running the ad engines and their ancillary businesses. I predict most of the AI money will follow a similar path.

@990000@mstdn.social all the schadenfreude aside, it’s worth remembering that AI and agentic AI is being hyped and pushed on people who don’t know programming, don’t understand APIs, and just assume the AI would do something similar to a person- figure out (or know) when morning is, set some internal timer, then issue the reminder at the right time - all for “free.” In fact, they are told that the beauty of AI is that they don’t need to know. The fact that AI is profoundly different and a simple request can have unintended consequences is not talked about enough.

@SebZuen@leminal.space Without wading too far into this, I could ask why Instagram is a separate “network” and not just part of Facebook (since they are both owned by Meta). Each platform (Mastodon, Pixelfed) has a different primary purpose and has features geared toward that purpose. The two platforms are also independently developed and maintained by different groups. That is actually a strength of the Fediverse. A Fediverse strength you don’t get elsewhere is that both Mastodon and Pixelfed are built on the same open standard - ActivityPub. That means to some extent you can follow a PixelFed account from Mastodon. It also means that anybody with the talent can write their own client to access either or both platforms and include whatever features they want. There are a number of third party clients out there. Proprietary networks actually block you from doing that. This commitment to open standards permits organic growth instead of waiting for “them” to add a feature or product direction.

What the heck is it with rental car marketers? Do they not understand their market? A few months ago, I took a few business trips. So I rented a car. Through my company. Using their negotiated vendor. No big deal. I’m home now. Where I own a car. And yet, the rental car company floods me with emails telling me how nice it would be for me if I just rented from them again. Right now. All the AI and data harvesting that is going on and they can’t figure this out?
