@SebZuen@leminal.space Without wading too far into this, I could ask why Instagram is a separate “network” and not just part of Facebook (since they are both owned by Meta).
Each platform (Mastodon, Pixelfed) has a different primary purpose and has features geared toward that purpose. The two platforms are also independently developed and maintained by different groups. That is actually a strength of the Fediverse.
A Fediverse strength you don’t get elsewhere is that both Mastodon and Pixelfed are built on the same open standard - ActivityPub. That means to some extent you can follow a PixelFed account from Mastodon. It also means that anybody with the talent can write their own client to access either or both platforms and include whatever features they want. There are a number of third party clients out there. Proprietary networks actually block you from doing that.
This commitment to open standards permits organic growth instead of waiting for “them” to add a feature or product direction.
