Holy fucking shit what was that? Absolutely not where I expected this series to go in season one. It doesn’t get totally away from the whole white savior thing as one might like, and the one black character on the show had suspiciously little to say about the whole situation but holy cannoli they talked about domestic slavery of Koreans in the US Army. This is a thing that I did not know about but in retrospect absolutely does not surprise me and I am going to go digging into that now. I have many questions about how this worked in practice. So, for just fuckin taking that shit straight on. I’m pretty impressed. Young Hi does feel very flat, and I feel like it might be leaning on stereotypes about Korean culture to justify why she wants to keep being a slave but I don’t know if that’s actually true. Her motivations aren’t really considered by any of the characters, or why she might do something like jump off the bus and hike back to be a slave. I can think of some, especially considering how they depicted Seoul, but they never really consider that explicitly. In lieu of a letter grade, I officially rate this episode “Jesus fucking Christ they talked about slavery being relatively widely tolerated in the US Army in the 1950s in episode five of season one of this television show in 1972; this would set the entire conservative media ecosystem’s hair on fire for months if this was a new episode of a show today and they did it in episode five”.

More detailed summary this time because, well, you’ll see. The army version of a temp shows up and he’s got someone, Young Hi (that is how my subtitles spelled it), doing domestic tasks for him. He uses a racial slur for Koreans in a comment about her, and Hawkeye tells him not to fucking do that. Turns out, Young Hi is this shitheel’s slave. They call her a “moose”, I don’t think the world slave is ever used, but she was “purchased” for a set amount paid to her family and she travels with and does labor for this guy for no further pay. So, yeah, slave. Hawkeye is enraged when he learns this, and that it is while technically not allowed, also relatively widely tolerated in practice. Young Hi says they do not have a physical relationship, and is happy where she is. Hawkeye is so enraged that he puts on a uniform for I think the first time in the series - he is almost always in a surgical smock, a robe, or a Hawaiian shirt - to try to pull rank on shitheel slaver and order him to free her, which fails. He immediately switches tactics to trying to buy her. He fails, and Radar helps him cheat at cards to win her. Hawkeye immediately tries to free her, but she kinda takes this as more like getting fired and just starts doing domestic tasks for Hawkeye and his compatriots. He tries to put her on a bus to Seoul, but she jumps off and hitchhikes back. There’s a montage of teaching her English and, I don’t know how else to put this, how to not be a slave? They call Young Hi’s family, who sends her little brother who is 1) like twelve years old, and 2) a gangster who talks openly about how they plan to just sell Young Hi into slavery again when they get home. There’s a fakeout where she leaves with the little brother, then comes back and says she told him to shove off. Cut to getting a letter from her, where she has gone to a convent school and is going to learn how to assist the nurses there. The end. Discussion in next post because character count.

MASH s01e03-04 Hover or focus to reveal Sensitive

Episode 3 a nurse Hawkeye and Trapper, our “heroes”, (look, i learned names!) think is hot gets transferred away so they make a deal with Col. Blake that he’ll get the nurse back if they come up with somebody to go 3 rounds with their general’s pet boxer in a tournament. Hawkeye ropes Trapper into doing it and winning, but he’s a godawful boxer, so they cheat by putting ether on his glove. Except that Maj. Burns switches the ether with water, so Trapper gets beat to hell while Hawkeye figure it out and gets more ether. Trapper wins the fight by cheating and they get the nurse back. D. Episode 4, Maj. Burns pitches a fit about Hawkeye not respecting his rank so Col. Blake promotes Hawkeye to head surgeon to get Burns to shut up. Burns continues pitching a fit up to the general, who comes to do an inspection which is the basis for a bunch of bits, general joins the surgery, is super impressed by Hawkeye, and tells Burns to shove it. Felt like a redo of the pilot almost, with a few tune ups. C. Show continues to be Fine. I’d probably skip ahead if this wasn’t watchable while I clean and stuff. Radar is the best character by far and gets a great bit in the inspection sequence in e4. I expected Klinger to be worse and yeah it’s not great but also so far it’s just a dumb bit that’s pretty easy to ignore. We’ll see if that holds.

the medical shipment jacked to sell on the black market, and the replacement shipment also got jacked. our heroes are out of hydrocortisone so they go to Seoul to buy some on said black market. It’s already under contract for another buyer but they offer their boss’s antique desk (they say “100 year old desk” so I guess from like 1850ish) in exchange. Shenanigans happen, they make off with the desk via helicopter somehow (I was a bit unclear on this part), get the medicine and screw the boss. The big thing I noticed in this one is the approach to race. This is a series made in 1972 about sometime between 1950 and 1953, for context. I wouldn’t say it’s amazing, the one shot we get of Seoul looks like a dystopian nightmare, their jeep is stripped for parts the second they take their eyes off of it (it’s a joke, in fact, haha how quickly things are stolen here, motivations not really considered at all) but the actual people are pretty well treated? Like the kid from last episode didn’t get much screen time but was fine for what there was of it, the black market guy is depicted as very competent and is at least as fleshed out and human as any other one-off (so far; wouldn’t be surprised to see this guy again) sitcom character, and the episode ends with him getting off a crack about “well you know, we all look alike 😉” at the boss. I thhhhhhink they’re trying to be not racist? They’re only kind of succeeding, but I think they’re trying. It’s Fine. C+

Feels extremely “Pilot”. Series in a nutshell, as I understand it at this point. This is set in the Korean War at an Army medical encampment. I’m going to have to refresh myself on the Korean War since my education kind of ignored that whole period of history mostly, because it makes it really hard to be pro-America to learn a single damn thing in detail about the Cold War. Anyway. The main characters are really good at their job and do subversive (by army standards) things for a combination of humanitarian reasons and hedonistic ones, and get away with it when they get caught by being very good at their extremely important jobs of saving people injured in the Korean War. It’s kinda House, but in the Korean War, and the main character is less of an asshole. Has women but is pretty godawful towards them. I knew it was gonna be like that for the first few seasons especially but ooooof. Multiple “jokes” that are just flat out sexual harassment. The plot of this pilot episode is that they drug their boss so they can auction off a weekend with one of the nurses to raise travel costs and tuition for a Korean kid who’s been helping them to go to medical school in the states. They rig the raffle so it goes to the Catholic Priest who obviously can’t go and is horrified. They get caught doing this when they aren’t supposed to but SUDDENLY A BUNCH OF INJURED SOLIDERS SHOW UP and the main characters save a bunch of lives and all is forgiven. I have a feeling more or less this exact thing is going to happen a lot. Hopefully less than I expect, we’ll see. I think it probably sounds like I’m very down about this, but it was pretty funny all that stuff aside and i understand it gets better from here. I’d give this alone, on its own merits, like a C. I don’t regret watching it but I’m not sure I’d recommend it either, at this point. Let’s find out how it’s gonna go.

As much as it’s correct, I think listing off every problem with language models just gets way too long and gives too many footholds to debate about parts that ultimately don’t matter and I think this is something that ought to be simple.

If you are sharing something you want other people to use or purchase, the landing page should explain what it is and does. This sounds obvious, but a catastrophic number of open source projects and even businesses fail to do this

I cannot count the number of times someone has dropped into a technical channel/forum/whatever with their thing and I have to ask them multiple times “okay but what does it do” even after reading all obvious material and I am usually surprised by the answer

pops a notification every time something on your box tries to connect to the internet, allows you to create allowlist (or denylist) rules based on executable, destination name/ip/port, source ip/port, etc

seems useful in the days of the litellm exploit that popped a shitload of people via pypi recently

this is for Linux. if you’re on a Mac this is a clone of a commercial software called “little snitch”. if you’re on windows I can’t help you
