@hannah@posts.rat.pictures tbh the explanations for unusual pronunciations above the words is something that would be cool if more languages had

@mjdxp@labyrinth.zone @hannah@posts.rat.pictures so i think the features of japanese it's trying to emulate are
- 3 writing systems (kanji: chinese characters, used for most vocabulary words [here, capitalised latin words with transcriptions above] / hiragana: phonetic characters, mostly used for grammatical forms [here, lowercase english] / katakana: phonetic characters, mostly for loanwords from non-chinese languages [here, greek letters])
- no spaces, since you switch writing systems regularly, the writing system switch serves as a word boundary. there are also forced spaces on commas (、<- this is a japanese comma, the character has a built in space), and periods (。).
- furigana/ruby characters above complex kanji words to indicate their pronounciation. usually, hiragana is used there
now, this version has several issues:
- hiragana & katakana should probably be represented as upper-&lower- case versions of the same script. they both have ~48 characters, that match up in every way. you can losslessly convert between one and the other. that is unlike kanji, that is an ideographic script, where characters represent units of meaning rather than sound. to transcribe a word from kanji to hiragana/katakana, you need a dictionary, you cannot guess it from looking at the characters
- the no spaces rule is applied very inconsistantly in the text. there shouldn't be any line breaks at all as far as i know!
- the transcriptions above words don't make much sense, in japanese they're used as a reading guide 90% of the time. not as a "meaning"/translation guide

@hannah@posts.rat.pictures I have always argued that English would benefit from having Furigana to help with pronounciation.

@mdione@en.osm.town @hannah@posts.rat.pictures no, because the joke is that they’re writing all caps Latin to represent use of Chinese characters in Japanese.
Chinese writing is just Chinese. Japanese writing is four systems in a trench coat
