Seeing this passed everywhere. Appears not to be a Nietzsche quote, which is not that surprising because it doesn't even sound like Nietszche? Like, was he on an episode of Reading Rainbow that week?

Once again "there's aluminum" is not a strong argument for going to the Moon. If there were bars of gold on the Moon's surface, it would not be worth it to get them. Why don't these articles ever talk to an economist? Or just a boring person? fortune.com/2026/08/06/p... ‘Pure insanity’—Elon Musk deta...

Must have been a rough ten years running cooking websites. Spend all that time trying to appease SEO with giant essays before the recipe and the suddenly AI just scrapes the recipe and gives it to users. Journalism's gotta be the worst, though I assume they're all going paywall now?

Really appreciated this review: shkspr.mobi/blog/2026/07... Not a lot of people are this able to dissociate their emotional reaction from reasoning. Though, I'll still argue our book is completely consistent with a Star Trek future. There's just a lot of work to do. Book Review: A City on Mars - ...

Every time I see an economist or tech geek saying "the AI future will be better because we'll make our living making stuff for each other" I think, I would like to see you running promo and backend for a Kickstarter, and see how relaxed you feel.

If you had to explain why the drawing on the left jumps out as AI before you start noticing the various AI-style errors, what would you note? (feel free to say it doesn't jump out as AI) RE: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:o72ypk5c474zqklkukaphuy3/post/3mpbth3alqk2k

Favorite new thing learning French was encountering the phrase "un peu trop hexagonale" meaning "a bit too hexagonal" to mean "a bit too French" because France is roughly the shape of hexagon. I'd encountered "l'Hexagone" plenty of times, but didn't know one could be hexagonale.

Reading a book by a British author when suddenly she writes "Weighing nearly 1.5 kilograms (close to four tins of baked beans), it contains an extraordinary movement." I am delighted to imagine a country where "like holding four tins of beans" is a more imaginable unit than a kilogram.

Interesting data from Pew on use of Ai by race/ethnic categories and by wealth. www.pewresearch.org/internet/202... Broadly speaking the more social privilege you have the less likely you are to use Ai for help.

Nerd confession: I've read hardly any Pratchett. But yesterday, my 12 year old got loaned a copy of Wee Free Men and read it front to back in, like, an afternoon. And then was quoting it to me for hours. Help me, what does she need next?

One of the interesting thing from talking to economists is the extent to which the private discourse is way more narrow than the public discourse, on e.g. immigration, rent control, and free trade. Like in immigration, the private discourse is almost exclusively pro; just a question of specifics.

Hey tech dorks, do you think the book "The Innovator's Dilemma" actually changed how companies respond? Like, I've been surprised how much the megacap companies are pouring into Ai, when at least in principle it should damage core business (e.g. buy eating search)
