  it's kind of funny that on my last trip to New York, I got every single negative stereotype about the city confirmed to me within just one day: -I saw a guy pissing on the metro -the streets were full of garbage -there were cops with rifles at one of the metro stops for some reason, just standing around -my friend, who I was visiting, lived in some hipster ass part of Brooklyn that was somehow both sketchy and insanely upscale

  I think a very large fraction of academia hatred stems from straight anti-intellectualism. "How dare these people try to understand the world without any direct economic benefit, and expect to have enough money for food!" There are PLENTY of legitimate criticisms of academia, but most of them apply equally well to any other large organization or have improved so much over the past 100 years that it's disingenuous to act as if they're getting worse.

  Honestly I wouldn't even have anything against LLM's and AI more generally if it was like alchemy, that is, trying to create a homunculus that is inherently adept at all things arcane and alchemical, as well as personal transformation and transmutation.
