I think a very large fraction of academia hatred stems from straight anti-intellectualism. "How dare these people try to understand the world without any direct economic benefit, and expect to have enough money for food!"
There are PLENTY of legitimate criticisms of academia, but most of them apply equally well to any other large organization or have improved so much over the past 100 years that it's disingenuous to act as if they're getting worse.

@yakmacker@society.kalli.st I don't even think it's a profit motive issue. I think people who have difficulty learning about a field are more incentivized by the Internet to deceive themselves into believing it's a hoax. It makes them feel bigger. Before the Internet, it's more obvious who is a trusted source and who isn't, but online, especially with anonymity, people who don't know anything can present themselves as experts and tempt others to indulge in disinfo-driven self-affirmation.
