@yakmacker@society.kalli.st I don't even think it's a profit motive issue. I think people who have difficulty learning about a field are more incentivized by the Internet to deceive themselves into believing it's a hoax. It makes them feel bigger. Before the Internet, it's more obvious who is a trusted source and who isn't, but online, especially with anonymity, people who don't know anything can present themselves as experts and tempt others to indulge in disinfo-driven self-affirmation.
