If I do find myself traveling air at any point in the foreseeable future - extremely unlikely, but stranger things have happened - I do believe I shall first invest in a set of Bluetooth speakers and a set of audio files including flatulence, vomiting, and assorted barnyard noises, and I suggest frequent fliers also stock up. Proselytizing is undoubtedly much more difficult when the sound of excessive gas is providing a much more welcome accompaniment to your hot air.

All these people talking about the 'remote data center' botnet and I just can't even. This is what we knew would happen with the Internet of Shit, this is the one and only logical iteration! Yes, it's even shittier than before, but what would you expect?

Wasn't the burning of the Library of Alexandria once considered one of the greatest tragedies of the literary world? I want to be clear here, it seems like the people in charge are revisiting all the horrors of the past in pursuit of a moment more at the top of a virtual heap.

@SrRochardBunson@universeodon.com Throughout my life it's been a truism that the people who proclaim their faith most loudly, at every street corner, in every dwelling and event, are the ones using it to cover for their worst sins. Is this no longer a thing people understand?

Every single fucking capitalist institution right now has been saying the line 'we wouldn't mind a union, we're just concerned that people might have been forced into it' for going on 75 years now and I'm really sick that the credulous media keep reprinting the obvious lie. Our society has a tendency to force people into capitalism, a broken system full of broken ideas run by the most broken people of all. People don't have to be forced into a union, just show 'em t...

So a case against a man who wiped his GrapheneOS phone with a duress password during what I can only assume was an illegal search-and-seizure operation -- the presumption of innocence, with regards to CBP, ICE, DHS and the Department of in-Justice, has long since evaporated -- is now progressing. The material facts are not in dispute, the question is whether he had any right to do so after having been refused an attorney repeatedly. I do so hope they go to a venue with a judge who will call th...

If there's someone I trust to keep me up on food and farming, it's Sarah Taber, of Farm to Taber fame, and this thread about how Taylor Farms didn't just drop the ball, they dropped a whole stack of balls which had been carefully and meticulously balanced for years, is impressive. Impressive in a lot of ways, really. The decision of TF to go for the uncertainty and doubt rather than launching an immediate investigation is incredibly telling about the corporate landscape. They coul...

If anything has proven the folly of #optout systems, it is the fact that robots.txt and spiders.txt are no longer respected by the plagiarism engines stealing the sum total of human knowledge in order to corrupt it and sell it back at a 10,000% markup. Opt-out systems are ephemeral, and only operate as long as the aggressor chooses to respect it, which is to say, 'until they can get away with not doing so'.

Youtube is starting to disable videos for folks with ad blockers like uBlock Origin. Interestingly, if you switch a Firefox browser to appear to be Chrome to Youtube, it does not run this check anymore.

When playing Mina the Hollower, I need to remember the First Rule of Soulslikes: You do not need to kill everything in your path. I keep forgetting this on a lot of games. Sometimes avoidance is the better strategy, even if those laser guards are going to give me 50 bones a pop. #minathehollower #gaming

Dear Mr. Carney: If you truly believed that the price of gas would fall due to you reducing the taxes on energy corporations, then your much-vaunted financial acumen has been wildly oversold. The fossil fuel groups have not been a free market for as long as I've been alive: they have been an oligarchy working in lockstep with one another to maximize their profits while harming the planet and everyone else out there. They will not allow one cent to slip through their greasy fingers; they w...

The worst thing is that I can't even say "I want to remove my uterus around this time of the month" because despite what my body is telling me, that uterus doesn't actually exist. Could someone please help me with an exorcism? Something something ghostly wandering uterus syndrome.

Do you know how I know that 'AI' won't lead to a fantastic revolution and a world full of equity and kindness? If it ever threatened to do so, billionaires would kill it in the creche. Billionaires exist because of inequity and inequality. They're allowed their impunity because of the power they hold over other people and the power their money gives. Any social change which would benefit non-billionaires is opposed by billionaires. Why would AI be different?

There is exactly one age verification system which has ever done what it purported to do, and that was the system in Leisure Suit Larry. Anything else is an overengineered waste of time and resources, and a security hole to boot.

We're nearly done this tin of butter cookies. Well, it's been nearly a month, those lasted a lot longer than I was expecting when I picked them up. Naturally, the cookie tin will be refilled shortly. It might even be with more cookies. I did just pick up 3kg of peanut butter the other week...

So, the Pope, as we know, hails from Chicago. When the Trump administration puts an Antipope up, from where will he hail? (I am aware that there are many, many antipopes, but I'm looking forward to seeing what this one's gonna be like.)

Somehow, learning that the guy who tried to firebomb Sam Altman's house is a Yudkowskian disciple is simultaneously unsurprising and yet brings a lot of things into focus I wasn't expecting. Popehat has noted that there's no place for political violence. Ken, honey, sweetie, dear one. I understand. You're upset about the fact that a celebrity got his neck perforated. It's terrible, really it is. Death sucks. But the Nazi Youth leader was already a creature of political violence. He promoted political violence at every turn. He was encapsulated by political violence. He encouraged people to commit political violence with his every word. His speeches were all abo...

How is it not clear and obvious that the first, most fundamental act of violence we typically commit in society is telling a newborn child who and what they're going to be? Look at that. A huge chunk of the possible paths in life that kid could take are closed off solely because of an arbitrary decision based in snap judgements of perceived traits, physical and mental. Is that sane?

Dear Mark Carney: Please note that inviting people into the Big Tent who are all about beating the shit out of all the folks who joined the Big Tent for their own survival is a very good way to get the wrong kind of people staying in the Big Tent. You are creating the Nazi Bar, and doing so with a smile and a handshake. #canpoli

So today the SCOTUS declared that a ban on certain types of 'talk therapy' is unconstitutional, thus precluding the chief -- though by no means the only -- weapon in the torturers' arsenal from being banned from use. In so doing, they have declared that it is fine for a supposed therapist to continually subject an LGBTQIA+ subject to verbal abuse. They have stated that as a free speech matter, therapists as a whole (legitimate and quacks) have the right to express their viewpoints...
