It seems pretty clear to me, being able to test iPadOS beside macOS, that even with macOS 27 the Liquid Glass UI is never going to look as good as it does on a HDR OLED display. It looks several times glossier and more crisp when I switch my desktop monitor over to HDR (which I never use), and even better still on the iPad's OLED. This feels like a generational shift as big as the Retina Display, and I think most people are oblivious to it β since no Mac currently comes with a HDR OLED scree...

Got hands-on on a Samsung Fold 8, and I regret to inform you that the screen still feels like cheap plastic and you can still feel the crease very distinctly, even on a 'new' unit. If this is the kind of thing Apple is about to ship, if they haven't got some miracle crease-cure and glass-feeling display, for $2,500, then I honestly don't think they should ship. The technology doesn't make up for the feel. Foldables are still theoretical to most customers; buyer's remorse...

Oof, macOS 27's Mission Control has been hit with behavioral changes in beta 4 that have ruined the way I use macOS π« It also feels really janky, like they're trying to sneak out a SwiftUI rewrite in a beta 4

Linus Torvalds: "And no, that's not the position of the Linux kernel. I realize that some people really dislike AI, but this is an area where I'm willing to absolutely put my foot down as the top-level maintainer. Linux is not one of those anti-AI projects, and if somebody has issues with that, they can do the open-source thing and fork it. Or just walk away." https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2026/07/linux-creator-linus-torvalds-puts-foot-down-on-anti-ai-comments/

So it turns out you can just hand a photograph of something to an AI like Tripo, and it will just spit out a viable 3D recreation π Found this great little watchtower outpost thing on Pinterest, generated a mesh from it, and spent the evening learning how to use Blender enough to slice it up and make it printable, as an experiment. Only have access to the free mode, so the mesh is a bit blobby, but I'm very interested to see if it prints. Another alarming and problematic superpower of the AI...

The chat experience *is* ChatGPT. Now it's squirreled away in a sub section of a sub pane inside a vastly more-complex app. It's hard to imagine anybody who actually wants to use ChatGPT wants to use it this way, Electron or not. And as a Codex user, I resent having my Codex deleted and renamed 'ChatGPT' instead. I don't want my 'chats' anywhere near my 'work'. This feels like a stupid move that will decimate casual ChatGPT desktop usage

Speaking of gamedev studios that need a shakeup, what the heck has Mojang been doing for ten years? They hired some of the hottest Minecraft mod developers making the coolest things, andβ¦ did nothing with them? Minecraft had so much potential β top Minecraft mods birthed entire multimillion-dollar game genres, like Factorio and its ilk β but the actual dev team has wasted their time building and adding one cute animal a year. Minecraft could have been an engine for an entire industry of games

A new Markdown editor for the Mac Plus written by @ActionRetro@bitbang.social (with Claude). LLMs are incredible at working on retro computing projects β it can write a 1984-era Macintosh Toolbox app in Pascal as easily as an iPad app in Swift https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEheu_r9UGw

"We require all code to be human authored. AI assistance should be limited to menial things (like code completion, regex, or find and replace)." Godot's updated Contribution Policy. My take: saying this kind of thing in 2026, when effectively the entire industry has already moved to using LLM-based agents as the primary IDE, is really naive. 'Code completion' was three years ago. You're only setting yourself up for having to walk this back later https://godotengine.o...

Instead of playing with any shiny new WWDC26 APIs, maybe we developers all need to start running our apps through Instruments and make drastic reductions to their RAM profiles? I think we're going to need to savor every byte we get for the next few years π₯²

There is a pile of new AppIntent-based APIs to make your apps' content available to Siri AI, but it doesn't seem like there's any way at all to actually debug what Siri is seeing or doing with it. And since you never know whether you have an app intent failure, or Siri's LLM has decided just not to use it when queried, this stuff feels like a mess to figure out. I wish there were some kind of debug commandline interface to Siri that scopes purely to the actions available to your...

The mourning has already started for Destiny and, by extension, Bungie. Starting on a D3 now means we probably wouldn't see it for 3β4 years or more, which would mean Bungie has to survive on what's left of D2 and Marathon income (which is already deep in the red), on what is already a stripped-down development team after the previous round of layoffs, and already subject to massive writedowns for Sony. It's not looking good. Skeleton crew and Destiny Classic? Spin off...

The latest tranche of UAP documents provides overwhelming evidence that there are 2β5m-ish spherical objects moving in our atmosphere (and into/out of our oceans) effectively all the time, giving off light and heat, moving unimpeded at high speeds, and exhibiting flocking behavior, captured on video with state of the art military video and sensing equipment. What they are or what they mean beyond that, π€·ββοΈ But it seems we're well beyond the point of belief/disbelief. They just 'ar...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@macrumors/116487146485938377 I do wonder just how many long-yearned-for apps or games might come to other platforms like this did, with the use of agentic programming. The old technology barriers are crashing down hard "Andrey started the Notepad++ for Mac project in March 2026 to close a twenty-year gap [β¦] The port is written in Objective-C++ on top of Scintilla and Cocoa (the "right way" instead of a Wine wrapper), and multi-agent AI d...

So much of what Codex is doing should be built-in to Apple's own workflows, in the OS and Xcode. But Apple is so far behind that we're really starting to get a runaway snowball effect. Two years ago, there was thought to be no moat around generative AI, but the moats are rapidly getting deeper and deeper today, and Apple is outsourcing to Google β whose AI isn't even in the conversation for Apple users or developers now β because they were too cheap to pay for either of...
