I was curious about my vinegar aversion and looked up why I didn’t seem to have any vinegar in my southern Chinese (Teochew and Cantonese) coastal cuisines at all. We also have almost no fermentation culture Apparently, the climate, widespread availability of fresh food, and centuries of global trade in our ports and regional preference for food caught / prepared on the same day meant we have almost no need for food preservation. Those cuisines dislike any flavors that overshadow the ‘origin...

Wow, a question I’ll never ask. Human diversity is so interesting. (In my part of the world, we sweat about ‘picky mother in laws who demand obsessive flavor and food quality excellence at the atomic level’)

A few less widely known things about #Singapore on the occasion of its 61st birthday. 1. We have urban otters! They disappeared briefly but you can now see them lots of places. There are various families named for the location they’re from, almost like mafia family names. ‘Bishan otters’ and there’s one named for a club (‘Zouk family otters’) https://youtu.be/J7f6s2g8C0I https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otters_in_Singapore

I’ve just walked through an area where a 1 bedroom is now 5 grand and a man on the street is really cold and asking passerbys to please buy him a hot coffee and a donut.

Tai Er in San Mateo and Santa Clara, imho one of the best Chinese restaurants They’re a chain from Sichuan, their founder is known for his obsessive quality control. They got me to start liking this dish (sauerkraut fish soup) when I actually disliked most versions of this previously https://maps.app.goo.gl/1J7YjB89paAyuESN8?g_st=ic #Food #ChineseFood #Bayarea #SanMateo

I spent the last four years essentially in a state of limbo where I didn’t feel like I could leave the country, change my job, take any risks, or do anything I wanted to. Then in March this year I received a little plastic card that seemed to say, you can do all of those things now. It feels so surreal and it makes me feel like none of that was real. Because it wasn’t. Immigration policies are just simply methods of control that countries dreamed up. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to accoun...

U.S. immigration authorities are proposing a change that will effectively mean any foreigner that loses their job goes out of status IMMEDIATELY (they want to eliminate the 60 day ‘grace period’) Folks should keep an eye on this one, it’s going to be a major one https://www.reginfo.gov/public/do/eoDetails?rrid=1495412 #Immigration

As a womb-have, though slightly older for this particular topic, at no point in my younger life did I ever feel like I wanted to reproduce with anyone who is currently going on and on about the birthrate. Men like that made me gay. Who wants babies with any of those people. ‘Do it for western civilization’ Even more no

All across the world this week it seems like people in the Chinese diaspora are being told to ‘go home’. From NZ’s foreign minister (saying this to a NZ minister of Chinese ancestry), to some Malaysian nationalists calling us ‘pendatang’ (even if some of us have been there longer than they have).

The amount of racism and classism by white upper middle class San Franciscans towards Jollibee opening is astounding. I’d rather eat a bucket of Chicken Joy than your bland $50 fried chicken breast at your ‘nice’ restaurants

so in the last 3-4 weeks in southeast asia, we've got "expats and tourists behaving badly" - italian students on a field trip to thailand to 'discover a new culture' wound up yelling condescendingly at Thai people in the train - american and european 'startup school' people kicked out of malaysia (primarily for wanting to set up a 'network state' but also for flouting local immigration rules) - french student in singapore fined for licking straws (and pu...

Saw a Hawaiian person discuss the cost of living references that mainlanders make: ‘I really don’t care that a gallon of milk is ten bucks. I don’t need milk. I need to get spicy ahi a few times a week, however. How much will that cost over there?’ Priorities. Same, brother.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@lnsy_dev/117011847340339614 There’s a new trend of evangelicals standing up in planes and singing and preaching in some domestic U.S. flights Like the philosophers Belle and Sebastian say; ‘oh, get me away from here / im dying / oh, I’m dying’

Two things can be true: 1. The Dutch destroy things for everyone else (two Dutch people organized a no-Indonesians running club in Bali, like they still rule the place) 2. The Indonesia government is fine over-reacting like it always does Having spent some time there I always felt like the strange balance of ‘expat privilege’ and also actual lack of meaningful ability to put down roots (unless married to a local) made for a very transient life that could shift overnight.

When we first moved to California we wanted to adopt a kitten. We went to a shelter and a grumpy 11yo tortie yelled at us. We brought her home instead. She lived for 8 more years. As she got older she was no longer able to climb the stairs to come up to the bedroom to cuddle, which was her favorite thing. If I wasn’t downstairs by 7am she would scream for me, like a baby. We would then have to cuddle on the couch for an hour before breakfast. I called it the cuddle alarm clock. So all of m...
