  We were checking puffin burrows this week. This involves sticking your arm down a muddy burrow full of puffin crap, with an endoscope, to see if there is a puffin and/or chick staring back at you. You then remove the endoscope and marvel at how your arm is covered in mud, puffin crap, and a swarm of several thousand seabird ticks, which fortunately don't seem to bite humans but.... Ewwwww

  The Farne Island puffin cam goes live today, which is annoying because it'll go viral, while we've had puffin cameras for years and no-one pays them any attention. Our hostingfor some reason restarts the feed every 12 hours, so you can't really link to our cameras - by the end of the day, the link won't work, it'll just be a recording. It drives me mad!!   So at work, for grant applications and documents and reports, I often have to write something like "a 25 year vision for the reserve" or "what will be the increase in population for this species in 10 years time if we fund your habitat improvement?"
