I found out recently that my colleague giving a talk to a local primary school was told that while the boys will have been to the local beach, no-one let their daughters even play outside the house. My friend's teenage daughter wanted to walk along the coastal path with their friends. The other parents were furious, because they might get lost or murdered or worse.
