On a scale of 1 to 10, the vanilla slice from an IGA supermarket scores a woeful -2. I looked nice but the tasteless custard was almost rubbery in consistency, the icing on top was far too sweet and the thin soggy pastry layers left much to be desired. #JustPlainAwful

I knew I had a medical appointment coming up soon, was pretty sure it was for a Tuesday and the clinic didn’t open until 9am. Vaguely recalled a possible 9:30 time so just in case I started driving there, planning to phone them at 9. Map apps on phone suggested 23 minutes of travelling time from my current location. I’ve made the call. Appointment is for 10:30 next Tuesday, so I can go back to my nice warm bed…

Another small batch of butcher shop lamb curry is cooking up in the slow cooker, been goung about four hours on the low setting. I estimate it’s about ½ done. I added smoked paprika, turmeric, sumac, frozen green beans, frozen peas/vorn/carrots mix to the meat, spice, onion and capsicum combo. In the cooking process moisture has been released so I’ve added dried garden peas and pearl barley in the hope of absorbing some of that excess. My kitchen smells very aromatic righr now.

That worked. Excess fluid in the lamb curry has been taken up by the addition of pearl barley and dried garden peas.

VicEmergency app says there’s been a collision in the main street of Gembrook, two persons trapoed. Map location puts it right outside the primary school. That’ll be fun. It’s school pickup time.

Just had a phone call from my youngest brother. He’s after a car to use as a runabout while his daughter’s Holden Craptiva gets a new turbocharger fitted. My niece has an auto-only licence so she’s driving the family car leaving my brother with either a fuel-hungry Mustang or a Renault Trafic van he shares with his wife. Meanwhile, I have a 13-year-old manual Mazda 2 sitting in the driveway doing nothing. He’s going to borrow it for a week or so.

Two parcels arrived from Amazon and were left on the doorstep. I was annoyed, “they could have rung the doorbell,” I thought. Not possible of course, not with discharged batteries in the bell unit. New batteries fitted, now it works.

Turned on my spare mobile phone (Motorola G75) which had recently been updated to Android 16. Saw lots of numbered badges on various apps that made no sense pop up unexpectedly. Opening the apps concerned wasn’t helpful, there were no logical alerts within these apps that would indicate any reason for these badges. Bastard thing wouldn’t go away until I reset app icon badges i the Notifications part of Settings to “dot” instead of “Numbered.” That fixed the issue. I normally use an iPhone 17e, t...

Butcher shop haul today: a couple of “money bags” which are pastry parcels filled with eye fillet steak, cream cheese, capsicum and gravy. Plus two brisket burgers and a bit over a kg of pre-made lamb curry.

I’ve put the lamb curry with some leftover rice and vegetable curry into the slow cooker for an hour on high. Then I’ll reduce it to low for at least four more hours. Lamb curry for dinner tonight—and several more meals thereafter.

Lamb curry is cooking up nicely, should be OK in about three hours. Very aromatic without being overly spicy.

Just added extra frozen vegetables to the lamb curry plus a few earthy spices like tumeric, sumac and paprika plus some dried herbs. This is going to be a great feed on a cold night.

I had intended visiting the cemetery where my parents were interred today but the artificial flower delivery from Amazon was too late in the day. Three things to do tomorrow: attend a doctor’s appointment, then participate in an internet chat room for a tech podcast. Grab some lunch then head for the cemetery to clean up the headstone. I’ve not been there since September last year, the 95th anniversary of Mum’s birthday.

A couple of weeks ago, following a hospital procedure, I asked staff if it was OK to resume a reduced dosage of Metformin to help control my blood glucose. I was told it was OK to try but to monitor my levels closely. So I went onto a single tablet in the morning, I had ceased a few months ago having had nasty side-effects from two daily tablets. The result was disturbing, my glucose levels increased in the order of 20 to 25% higher than the normal average. I decided on Friday last week to stop...

Car service is due at 70,000 km, that’s about 750km away. I’ve been averaging around 250 km per week, so I’ve just made an online booking for June 1st.

Yesterday I observed that towels on their rail in the rainroom were not drying so around noonnI started up the dehumidifier. Six hours kater after returning from my errands, the device had collected around 2 litres of water from the air. Its reservoir was alrady half full at the start of the process so it was now full and the dehumidifier had shut off. I emptied the reservoir and noted the room’s humidity level was 69%.

Pain is a feature right now. A project today involved use of a powerful electric rotary hammer to bash its way twice through four inches of concrete to reattach a wooden slat that had come adrift from a concrete park bench. I had to bend awkwardly while doing my stint on the drill and it’s done my lower back no favours at all. And to top it off, both knees are giving me grief with the pain, the left knee ‘cos it’s fuct with arthritis and the right knee because of the stance I had to take with t...

Took a trip down memory lane, so to speak today. Back to the old home town to check out a newly-opened cafe. It’s in a converted barn that was made into a ressome 20 years back but now it’s a business called Willing Enable. The idea is to provide access to modern technology and home living aids for older folk in rural communities. This one is combined with the local post office ans a cosy cafe. I had a toasted roast beef, cheese and pickle sandwich on homemade sourdough bread with a very fine ca...

Just on a whim I dropped in on the butcher to see what was on offer. Left with another bag of lamb curry. Actually I haven’t finished the batch I cooked up last week.
