Also is it really such a mystery why efforts at diagnosis might have been more concentrated on young children starting their educations than middle-aged folks who've had decades to develop coping strategies? RE: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:e7gbntp2tzobn7cfi37viei3/post/3msstgws4lc2h

It's not just that this is, of course, an insane lie—it's that *just thinking about it for ten seconds*, without looking anything up, should make it screamingly obvious that the claim couldn't possibly be remotely close to true. You have to actively shut your brain off to say stuff like this. RE: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:4llrhdclvdlmmynkwsmg5tdc/post/3mstl5wdl6o2v

If you find yourself dooming, it's worth recalling that Trump has neither the legal nor (more importantly) the practical ability to effectively federalize & rig the midterms. But if you find yourself complacent, it's important to note he can cause a whole lot of chaos by illegally trying & failing. I think that gender authoritanism is why they’re *indifferent* to the burden on parents working outside the home, but the idea that it’s the true motive implies they secretly understand the medical rationale is nonsense. I think at this point it’s fair to presume they’re genuinely stupid. RE: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:eoxg5kzxq4iavkrzpffta7gr/post/3msshkwdlvc2d

If people think Dems need to present some kind of conception of masculinity they could do a lot worse than… adulthood. It’s not that hard to make the Hegseth/Tate brand of puffed-up adolescent machismo look like the ridiculous, childish pose it is. A Trump quote from this piece makes a fitting motto/epitaph for both him & his enablers: “It will work out. It always works out.” When you take a minimal level of baseline competence for granted, it starts to seem like a law of nature, & it gets hard to imagine how bad things might get without it. Just into Book 3 of On the Calculation of Volume & the most implausible thing so far is that the protagonist has never once mentioned the film Groundhog Day or that one TNG episode. Presumably because we are in the realm of Serious Literary Fiction where nobody is conscious of pop culture.

Been reading It Can’t Happen Here & Sinclair Lewis keeps taking little potshots at Upton Sinclair, which I can’t help suspecting is because he got sick of people mixing him up with the other leftish novelist with Sinclair in his name.

I think there’s a tendency to frame this as a “Trump’s silly obsessions” sideshow story, but it’s a pretty grotesque corruption story. The administration squandered millions on a no-bid contract to an inexperienced company that botched the job, then indicted innocent people to cover their error. I do not love to see it. This is an awful legal path to the correct conclusion. The logic of this suit is that it violates the free exercise rights of parents for their kids to be exposed to information that contradicts their religious beliefs. That is a wrong and dangerous principle. RE: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:6wkmlbv4opeuwppxi73ozhna/post/3msdkvtqzm22t

QI doctrine essentially means that unless your rights were violated in EXACTLY the same way as someone else who won a case, the best you can hope is to spend outrageous amounts of money setting a precedent for the NEXT person who gets their rights violated in that exact way.
