Just into Book 3 of On the Calculation of Volume & the most implausible thing so far is that the protagonist has never once mentioned the film Groundhog Day or that one TNG episode. Presumably because we are in the realm of Serious Literary Fiction where nobody is conscious of pop culture.

I like the series, but one of the sillier affectations of a certain species of literary fiction is the idea that, even when nominally set in a specific year, it has to assume an air of pseudo-timelessness by eschewing any cultural or technological touchstones that anchor it there.
