"Democracy is a better idea than fascism, but the liberal international order does not exist because it is a better idea. It exists because the democratic powers built bigger and better guns, killed millions of fascists, overthrew fascist governments, tried and hanged fascist leaders, and liberated or coercively democratized former fascist countries.... The liberal international order rests on a founding act of violence, of which the Normandy campaign was a crucial part. It was justified, o...

Hmmm. I just tried a new cocktail: the Rothko #1, basically a Negroni-and-tonic made with Old Tom gin. It's good! The tonic + less-botanical gin makes it less overpowering than a regular Negroni.

Watch recommendation: the 2026 documentary "Bang My Box: The Robin Byrd Story." https://www.imdb.com/title/tt41702551/ A young woman starts a late-night 1970s NYC public-access show, and becomes an important advocate for gay rights, HIV education, free speech, and ultimately for sex-positive aging. Unexpectedly enjoyable and informative.

Not a surprise. But when they say "intellectual diversity" they actually mean "not lose our more conservative subscribers," and they know that's what they mean. They trade truth for $.

I'm so old, I remember being taught that the United States government allocated powers evenly among three separate branches so that no one official would have too much power. Also, they didn't know back then about continental drift. In case any English-only USians want to watch today's #WorldCup final without subscribing to Fox Sports, the game is showing in Spanish on Telemundo and streaming audio for free on iHeartRadio. The only glitch I haven't been able to solve is that the two streams are out of sync by about 20 seconds, and I haven't figured out how to pause the audio stream successfully to make them match.

There's a new bill to make Daylight Saving Time permanent is the U.S. But permanent Standard Time would be healthier and safer. (In fact, the U.S. tried permanent DST back in 1974, but stopped bec people were being killed commuting/walking to school in the dark.) https://aasm.org/advocacy/position-statements/permanent-standard-time-is-the-optimal-choice-for-health-and-safety/ So why isn't permanent ST being proposed? Because GOLF INDUSTRY LOBBYISTS want that extra hour of daylight aft...

Today I hope that when John Roberts wakes up in his small locked room at the Psychiatric Institute of Washington the orderlies speak to him in those artificially soothing voices adults use with small children and frightened animals and all he gets for breakfast is a harmless porridge but then fairly promptly he is taken to a staff psychiatrist for the interview required by District of Columbia Code §21-522 and the psychiatrist quickly realizes who he is and apologizes that no one has recognized...

When bad people die, don't grieve. Don't even pretend to grieve. Not even if they had baby faces and a pleasant drawling way of talking. Not even if they were U.S. senators. When bad people die, don't say nice platitudes just because they're dead. When bad people die, be briefly grateful. Then forget them and continue doing good work.

Two standard things people on dates sometimes really wish they'd remembered to bring are breath mints and condoms, so how come no one has ever packaged them together in little joined foil envelopes and sold them in bars or at the counter in convenience stores as "Condomints"?
