Respirator ✔ Goggles ✔ Ear muffs ✔ Boots ✔ Concrete demolition under way. I'm not actually doing it, my job is to remove small bricks and be available in case someone needs to call and ambulance, lol. But still, exciting!

Today's big garden checklist: - remove the concrete paths - dig up the blueberries and pot in acidic mix - plant the mandarin tree - move the tall artichoke (it fell down for the second year in a row, it needs to be moved closer to the fence for support)

Has anyone already added "Pool for Cats"? #SwimmingPoolSongOrPoem

1.2 paths removed! And the blueberries and artichoke were relocated. No tree planted, it will wait. #gardening kinda. Preparation!

Yikes. I'm not as concerned about the origin of the tomatoes (although it's annoying if you're trying to buy home grown, or paying a premium for a specific region). But lead and salmonella in the spices and methanol in the vodka is another issue entirely. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-07-27/food-fraud-investigation-reveals-truth-behind-labels/106960116 #food #cooking #ausNews

Once again looking for, but unable to find, any evidence that there was an episode of Sooty in which Sweep joined the fash (possibly he became a police dog? Or joined the army? In any case he marched around the house singing a marching song). I know it existed, because both my sister and I remember it, well because Nan had a VHS recording and we saw it a lot. We both still hum the time, and it comes up every time a baby does that arm straight out thing they do in their sleep. We might not hav...

Three good things today: 1. Niece cuddles and nephew wrestles (more an age thing than a gender thing, it is frowned upon to wrestle newborns). 2. I am one in my own bed tonight. 3. Managed to impress a 9yo just by being older than her mum, and being able to explain 4yo behaviour. #3GoodThings

Where's an eccentric billionaire looking to fix an emerging global problem by hiring me, a random woman with a weird skill mix who is willing to travel and work with a cast of global oddities? It's as if all the Gibson books were fiction.

Three good things today 1. Photos of nearly-4yo nephew holding his new sister, looking ecstatic. Pretty cute. 2. I'm enjoying my library book, The Echo Wife, by Sarah Gailey. Diabolical. 3. Had a good chat with a horticulturist who sold me a peach tree and showed me how to prune it. #3GoodThings

Apparently I need to be wearing shoes in my house, which I am vehemently against. I have soft slippers, but I need to see if I can find some that fit raises and orthotics and don't scuff the floor. Boo hiss.

I know all the tech people know this, but just in case: if you have the choice between an internet connected thing and one that isn't, pick the one that isn't. I get that it's not always a choice, for money or disabilty reasons. And if you happen to be a policy or law influencing person, for the love of God would you please crate decent security, privacy and data use rules, with teeth, for IoT products?

Three good things today. 1. One friend had his last chemo treatment today. 2. Another friend won a Victorian Civil Justice Award for giving 6+ years of his life and effort to fighting for police accountability for illegal use of force (pepper spray). I'll put links to read in a reply. 3. I booked my trip to meet my baby niece (she gets born next week). #3GoodThings

Three good things today 1. Can afford to see a podiatrist, and got to, at short notice, and he was nice. 2. Made delicious sweets. 3. The upside of being less mobile was that I have had a lot of time to watch doctor who. #3GoodThings

A reminder that if you rely on Google Maps for people to find your business, it just got less useful. You can't access reviews or even opening hours now without signing in. Just like Facebook. #FuckBigTech #monopolies

And three good things today 1. Started my day with Zumba, the fun and silly middle-aged ladies play session at my local leisure centre. 2. Finally did a puzzle I got for Christmas, and it was soothing and pretty. 3. Went for a walk in the sunshine to do some groceries. I'm grateful for the sunshine, and for living walking distance to the shops, and being able to afford my groceries. #3GoodThings

Three good things today 1. Finally decided on the first step for backyard food growing overhaul, so it will start soon. 2. Partner is feeling a lot better after bring very sick for a few days, and it seems I didn't catch it (knock on wood). 3. Watched Terminator 2 and it was good. #3GoodThings

Oh Farrer. I'm having more feelings than I thought I would. I don't even live there anymore, haven't for decades. But I still feel vaguely responsible. And reminded of why I left (fled, more like) and the pressing, stifling way the place felt as a young lefty. And reminded of friends being beaten for being gay, the time swastikas were spray painted all over our school, and girls blamed for assaults, and the absolute certainty among us teens that you could never trust t...

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-05-06/australian-educational-facilities-impacted-by-canvas-hack/106650094 We were told about this at uni today. They took pains to tell us they "only" had access to out names, emails, and messages between people. But don't worry, not our passwords or bank details. I mean, yes, if they had access to passwords (which ought to be encrypted), or bank details (which ought to be handled separately by someone with better creds than the beleaguered uni I...

Update: there is an evidence based web app to help you choose a safe sports bra: https://bra.edu.au/ Original: Does anyone here have D cup + sports bra reccs? My beloved Berleis no longer fit, and before I replace them with a size up, it'd be good to know if the options have changed. I've stuck to that black and white Berlei jump-proof one for ages. The only time a celebrity endorsement has worked on me - Serena Williams knows what's up with strapping down.

I'm very angry with the NSW treasurer Daniel Mookhey in the news saying that the pay rise for nurses and mid wives, "will be borne by the tax payer". Yeah, no shit. Not necessarily inaccurate. However you would never, *never* hear them say this about police, the army, or themselves. It's an unnecessary dig at a group of workers, mostly women, in a feminised industry, and it sounds an awful lot like, "listen hear you bunch of uppity strumpets&quo...

My partner and I met working on the ACT Greens campaign that got Shane (and others) elected the first time. (Spending hours in a small room designing flyers and having endless meetings about budgets and coreflutes is sometimes conducive to romance!) Shane's a good guy, and he's had a good run, I'm glad he gets some downtime now, and I'm happy to see the space opened up for new voices too. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-04-20/shane-rattenbury-steps-down-as-act...
