Oh Farrer.
I'm having more feelings than I thought I would.
I don't even live there anymore, haven't for decades. But I still feel vaguely responsible. And reminded of why I left (fled, more like) and the pressing, stifling way the place felt as a young lefty. And reminded of friends being beaten for being gay, the time swastikas were spray painted all over our school, and girls blamed for assaults, and the absolute certainty among us teens that you could never trust the teachers, police or parents with anything real or even vaguely political (at a time when the existence of sexuality or assault or racism was political).
I hope the brown people, Aboriginal people, queers, feminists, unionists and lefties are OK tomorrow.

@keira_reckons@aus.social is going to be a lot of hand wringing about 'grievance politics' and the 'forgotten voters' over the next few days. ...but you don't have to have spent a great deal of time there to know its a deeply bigoted place and that their grievances are generally contrived bullshit born of ignorance and hatred. > I hope the brown people, Aboriginal people, queers, feminists, unionists and lefties are OK tomorrow. x2
