  a lot of people have these midifighter twister controllers, mine was starting to bug me: the rubberised knobs had gone crumbly, the buttons on the side are so hard to press they're unusable and the thing's twice as tall as it needs to be. so i printed a new case - half as tall, hinged buttons that feel nice to press, really grippy neoprene base. non-destructive mod, files here https://codeberg.org/james_holden/prints

  did some tests on sample playback in max/msp, sharing because i thought i understood this stuff but just how bad it can sound surprised me. so: based on some tests oskari tamelin (of buzz fame) did, you take a sample of a 15khz sine and play a c major scale up and a c major scale down with it. dog music, bat jams. here's a synthesised example of what it'd sound like if playing back samples at different pitches didn't introduce problems. these are on the edge of my hearing, the hig...

  jan jelinek last night, really lovely show, intimate & delicate, not afraid to take it down to just dusty noises and then back up again, very flowy. i danced. interesting version of sharing-your-screen too right? really liked that, even though it's so much more inscrutable than even the densest livecoder projection it still felt like it opened up the 'performance' a bit

  i'm trying to id a song i heard. in a club, maybe 98, 99. hard trance/techno? uk or euro i guess. it had a woman's voice - cold, aloof? reading Kant's critique of pure reason - i remember it ended with 'A UNIVERSAL LAW' and i guess the donk followed that. anyone remember it?

  @tehn@merveilles.town i had to think about this: a lot of technicals are solved which sounds boring but is liberatory - much more light and efficient, many limits and caveats removed. but more important the interface is completely reimagined, does a few things others dont in pursuit of a balance between being as quick a route to richness as strudel but still free to branch and feedback and bring alive etc. a lot of influence from livecoding but more in the direction of making it open enough tha...

  addendum to last thread, a while back i said something out loud about the 'sound of strudel' and then felt like i should've investigated more before running my mouth. so... one of these is strudel in chrome, one is strudel in firefox (recorded via obs)

  excited about this - april 24, creative coding utrecht have invited me to play. i've posted about it here a bit.. but the live coding scene is 100% the thing that's made me most excited over the last few years - seeing people perform actually live music with computers, as free as jazz, freer, showing their screen, sharing what they're doing with an audience who understand what they're doing has felt so refreshing after witnessing half a lifetime of music industry smoke and mirror...

  @jrp this isn't quite it - the sampling theorem says that a sample can perfectly capture without ommission or addition (ie noise and distortion) any signal whos frequencies lie in the range 0 to half-samplerate. so a 1khz sine _can_ be perfectly captured and reproduced by sampling at 44k. my tests were about if you try to repitch that sample because it all falls apart when you do.. you did make me think over whether i understand it right tho, here's an attempt to explain the square edge...

  @jrp ahh good spot thanks - i did the synthesised one this morning on the other computer and forgot it's at a different sr. if you zoom in on the perfect one which is measurably & audibly free of artifacts you still see a picture like your screenshot - as i understood it: the post-filter in a dac (and the bandwidth of the rest of the chain after that) cuts off everything over nyquist so by the time you hit the speakers it does look like it should? - if you imagine what that waveform...

  @hellocatfood@post.lurk.org i've got an old nakamichi dragon dr2 which sounds lovely and is really good for studio use (you can use it as an insert effect - like record onto the tape and monitor straight back off it) but an elastic band in it snapped and omg such a pain to fix. sorry if this is useless info..
