did some tests on sample playback in max/msp, sharing because i thought i understood this stuff but just how bad it can sound surprised me.
so: based on some tests oskari tamelin (of buzz fame) did, you take a sample of a 15khz sine and play a c major scale up and a c major scale down with it. dog music, bat jams.
here's a synthesised example of what it'd sound like if playing back samples at different pitches didn't introduce problems. these are on the edge of my hearing, the highest i don't hear at all:

@@jamesholden@universeodon.com Hmm. This is a 44.1KHz file, technically it can't reach higher than 22.050 Hz. It is possible, that some of your sinus tones play higher than that, up to 30KHz if i understood you right. So those will not sound at all. Also probably all of those sinuses will render as some kind of rectangularly distorted, as the sample rate doesn't allow a resolution fine enough to actually make it a sinus. Here's a digitized "sinus" at around 10KHz at 44.1KHz
