  A pet peeve is people misusing this alleged proverb (such as below) where it's made more and more explicit so that it can only be interpreted in a single way. And then is still presented as being the original proverb, with it being an old phrase giving gravitas to whatever hamfisted point the author is trying to make.   I finally got a pair of alpha-like fleece/mesh mitts after seeing it out in the wild for the first time late in my Norway trip and getting to try it on. And holy fuck this material is some incredible space-aged shit. Cannot wait for my current midlayer to become tatters so I can swap it out.

  @apodoxus Alpha Direct is a brand name of a type of micro fleece that's mesh-like to make small pockets of air to trap warmth. I bought midlayer mitts of a material that's similar (different brand, OMM if you're curious), and they are stupidly light and packable and so warm.   @PallasRiot yes. Can recommend. They are def warm and they feel far less gross when wet than synthetic or merino. Downside is (so I've heard) you can't do one under a VBL if you plan to unzip the VBL to dump heat when you get warm as that exposes moist bare skin to frigid air. I'm fully sold on mesh base layers over traditional ones. This video is useful but slightly overestimates its conclusions because it's not as controlled as it claims. Still some real data h...

  @PallasRiot Maybe mesh base, work shirt, durable fleece, and hardshell/jacket over it? Bottoms also mesh and then work trousers over it? But also I think the main advantage of mesh is absorbing less sweat, so going up a mountain for two hours and then another two down the back side. High intensity, lotta sweat followed by needing to stay warm at lower output while damp. Idk if the price of mesh vs cheap base layers makes it worth it for your use case. Or maybe the price difference isn't...

  Fediverse map nerds. I need your help. I need to create maps that I can apply custom filter/styling to.   @federicomena I want to download topo maps and print them with some control over the contour lines and shadings like "forest" vs. "marsh" etc. I want to overlay GPX track and style that. I want some features (river, peak, hut, etc.) to appear and be styled in some way.

  @contrapunctus It seems like QGIS is the tool I need, and I was able to follow bits of the tutorial. The steps you listed here don't seem to actually get me where I need. GeoFabrik doesn't have Shapefiles available. For adding layers, I don't see a source type called "service." I'm on v3.40. I've tried searching for what I need, but this seems to be a whole world that I just don't know quite well enough to be able to even ask...
