From Altman proclaiming the “singularity”, to the Guardian publishing blather about possible AI consciousness, to OpenAI and Anthropic blaming their cybercrimes on “rogue models” the nonsense is coming fast and thick these days and much of the media is lapping it up. Time for another Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000 livestream with me and @alex@dair-community.social: Monday, August 3, noon PT https://twitch.tv/dair_institute

LinkedIn where people come to proudly state that they have cooked their own brains and/or just really really love licking those boots. All of these were in response to my post about the ACM's announcement that they've decided "Now is the Time to Give LLMS Access to the ACM Digital Library" and then requestd input on that decision.

A couple of days ago I did a jetlagged live posting on bsky about the terrible op-ed in the Guardian about "AI" consciousness. Not going to port it bit by bit over here, but someone used skywriter to put it all in one place. For your enjoyment, some ridicule as praxis: https://skywriter.blue/@emilymbender.bsky.social/3mqzj7xzqfc2i

RE: https://dair-community.social/@emilymbender/116935294823990847 Over on LinkedIn, I heard from Jeanna Matthews, who is co-chairing an ACM taskforce on Responsible AI use (saving commentary on that framing for later...) pointing out that this decision does *not* come from ACM leadership and that community input really does matter. Make your voice heard here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeq7MFM7TlSXIaIXQnIltiQeWE_w3cl36HFPwql4S7u-drmzg/viewform LinkedIn screenshots in next post...

This article ends with a good conclusion, but it is extremely misguided along the way. It is also a rich text for exploring how clear language helps make the point better. A thread: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aek5570 [Note to Mastodon 'splainers. A "thread" means that I have several related and linked posts. If you reply to this one directly, you are probably effectively interrupting/talking over me.] >>

RE: https://mastodon.acm.org/@ACM/116929782094395296 This is the weirdest request for input that I've seen in a while. It's almost like the ACM is sitting at the table with the "change my mind" sign. So, let's do it. Short thread with the input I gave them:

RE: https://tldr.nettime.org/@tante/116924874418802342 I really appreciate this stance. Too many people try to use "but it's useful" as a counterargument to what we say, for example, in The AI Con. Useful for whom and at what cost (to the user and especially others) should always be the immediate follow up.

File under plus ça change... I wrote this in April 2022 and I feel like I am still making all of those arguments today, more than four years later. https://medium.com/@emilymenonbender/on-nyt-magazine-on-ai-resist-the-urge-to-be-impressed-3d92fd9a0edd (About the only thing I would change is avoiding using "human" as a noun, which has become icky.)

When people ask me what the phrase "artificial intelligence" means, my short answer is, it means "venture capitalists, give me some money". But OUP asked me for a longer answer, given here and summarized in the section headings: https://doi.org/10.1093/9780197852712.003.0067

A phenomenon I've noticed recently is people trying to occupy some untenable middleground wrt to the use of systems sold as "AI" -- this is a position where people try to recognize the harms of this tech but also hold space for "responsible" or "ethical" use. 🧵>>

Hello #nlp #nlproc world: It's still the case that you should name the language you're working on. Without that, you might think you've made your claims sound more general, but in fact you've made them sound unsupported. #AmReviewing #BenderRule

I have mixed feelings about this piece. The reporting seems fair but it's problematic to us "AI apocalypse" as the framing & elevate the fever dreams of those who are most insulated from the real harms. https://spectrum.ieee.org/artificial-general-intelligence AI doomers & AI boosters inhabit the same fantasy world, which would just be laughable except they are capturing too much of a scarce resource: the attention of policy makers.
