When someone is trying to hold this untenable position, a few things tend to come up (not everytime, not everyone): 1- Defensiveness. People read criticism of the systems and proposed uses of the systems as accusations that users are "bad people". Thus a criticism of the tech lands as criticism of the user, and tensions flare. >>

@SomeVeganCheeseIsOk@mastodon.social It's not a marketing term. We have always used this term. There was no marketing team involved. Humans need words to describe certain stuff. When we do choose those words those words are assigned that meaning. It's linguistics, it has nothing to do with who you think is a good or bad guy or what a certain group might like or not. In certain times words can change or the meaning of words can change. But in this case it's pretty clear I think. @xvf17@sfba.social @emilymbender@dair-community.social

And I don't think it's ever been used to describe a machine person that's alive. It was always used as simulated intelligence. Which LLMs are. @emilymbender@dair-community.social I recently attended an engineering conference and at a panel discussion an attendee asked "How should I deal with a colleague who doesn't want to use AI?" And the answer of one of the panelists was: "First acknowledge their ethical or environmental concerns, because there's no way around this. It is a problem. Second talk to them about how the business requires all of you to use it." It started so well … :blobcatgrimacing:

But you are driving a car as well! But what are your solutions? In other words, it seams to me the subject does not seem to matter, the ' reasonable middle ground ppl' will always find a way to prevent change. I am reminded of the words of mlk: Martin Luther King, Jr. , Letter from Birmingham Jail (1963) I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice
