Large language models, used these days primarily to produce synthetic text, are a scourge on our information ecosystem. The role of the ACM and other scholarly organizations is to curate and produce and archive scholarly work. This should extend to being good stewards of the information ecosystem and not colluding with the powers actively polluting it. >>

@emilymbender@dair-community.social I was recently asked to develop an introductory module on ethics in cyber security. It's basically "read and discuss the ACM Code of Ethics". Followed by a discussion of what relevant laws and regulations are and how they basically just enforce the principles of the ACM Code. I'm disapointed that this was even a question.

@emilymbender@dair-community.social I asked them what the rush is. At least wait a few years, until the investment bubble bursts, and their members can afford computers again and then methodically—and with the involvement of their members—very carefully plan what to do (if anything).

"This account has been hidden by the moderators of social.linux.pizza" Of course I can click "Show Anyway" but I've also seen this recently on another post (not by you) and I'm starting to worry what is prompting this attempted censorious behaviour by the social.linux.pizza moderators.

@emilymbender@dair-community.social great response - especially the paper mache part - made me smile. The writing was on the wall for ACM. With recent CACM the paddling for a share of attention of the heads at ACM in the AI arena became almost unbearable. At the end it is a business case for them, the scientific argument is only sugar coating it.
