  When you adopt a country, how much of its history do you adopt with it? If, for example, you're a first- or second-generation American, do you get to be proud of the Constitution? And, if yes, what about what happened to the native population? If you're British, do you get to celebrate 1966? And should you apologise for the massacre at Amritsar?

  Talking about being Black with Black people is always different from talking about being Black to white people. Cos every conversation about blackness to white people is really just a conversation about whiteness. Do they feel guilty, resentful, entitled? I can empathise, though. Every conversation I have with women about womanhood is really about my relationship with manhood. Same thing when I speak to queer people, and trans too.

  I remember back in the day when Bryan Adams' Everything i do was number one forever, and when Rihanna's Umbrella was number one forever, and Boyz II Men was number one forever. I heard those songs so much that my ears started to bleed.   Sometimes we all need a reminder that race is a cultural construct. And every culture will construct something slightly different. I was watching the Australian version of the sitcom Ghosts and was shocked to hear the main character described as Black. Black? That woman is white to me.   Spent a really long day interviewing for an entry-level developer - ten interviewees, back to back, whittled down from 300 applications.   NOTE: I do not understand money. Keep that in mind. Musk bought Twitter for $44B. Instagram and Tiktok are worth billions too. All based off the backs of thousands of content creators toiling for free for hours every day. Many of us toil for h̶o̶u̶r̶s̶ minutes every day creating content for Mastodon.   The United States of America is at war. And so it makes complete sense to me that its news outlets would report the (very sad) death of US soldiers while making no mention of the fact that Iran has lost soldiers too. Being fair and balanced takes on a slightly different tint when your country is at war - even if it's a war you disagree with.   Here's a dilemma you have as a person from two different cultures: how do you pronounce the names of people who mispronounce their own names? For example, English football is full of players of Nigerian heritage - Saka, Madueke, Eze - and everyone mispronounces their names. So should I anglicise their names too?   Growing up in Northern #Nigeria, I knew lots of kids of Lebanese heritage. I don't know their history but many had been in Nigeria for generations; they spoke better Hausa and Pidgin than me, but were never considered truly Nigerian. The best ones grew up and left. The unrecognised strength of countries like Britain and America is that you *can* become British, become American. We keep our best.   Discussing Trump with my American mother, who says she really dislikes him but... you've got to admit he's a great businessman and he's really brought up his kids well and Iran is horrible and the killing of their schoolchildren was an unfortunate mistake so holding it against Trump would be unfair.   Heard this crazy story of American "justice" on the Criminal podcast. A man is arrested for a crime cos the police used AI facial recognition. The man has a solid alibi: he was in hospital cos his child was being born. 6 months later, he pleads guilty. Why? He's been locked up all this time, awaiting trial.   Here's a thing. Ask any child what noise a train makes and they'll probably say "chugga chugga choo choo." Funny thing is that pretty much no one alive today was around in the days when trains - powered by steam - made that sound. The stories we're told are powerful, often even more powerful than the evidence of our senses. We think trains sound like that cos we're told they sound like that. Stories are powerful; be careful with the stories you tell.

  I live in a midsize English town. I like it here and feel nothing but safe. It's crazy to think that all it'll take for that to change is for some other brown skinned person here to do something criminal and for Elon Musk to tweet about it, and my life could be in danger.
