RE: https://toot.community/@betalogue/116493694444166225 Allegedly, in Outlook for Windows, there is a “x” button next to each address suggested in the AutoComplete menu. Not so in macOS (or in the Outlook web app). Also, deleting the “Recent Addresses” folder at ~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/Outlook/Outlook 15 Profiles/<Profiles name>/Data/Recent Addresses/ does not work (at least on my Mac). https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-the-recent-addresses-fe...

@lapcatsoftware Not only was iOS 7 never fixed, but Liquid Glass made it even worse.

The more I use my iPad, the less I want to use stand-alone apps on it. It’s not just that they are full of unwanted content that can be (partly) blocked in Safari. It’s also that their (seemingly inevitable) GUI quirks make it nearly impossible to keep track of what I am viewing/reading, to make connections, to record stuff, etc. Everything is fragmented, and therefore unmanageable. At least by doing everything in Safari, I still have a chance to be able to keep things under (partial) control.

“Oh, you don't like release notes that just read 'bug fixes and performance improvements'? Alright, we'll give you… advertising instead.” — El Gato Software (“What’s new” in Stream Deck 7.4.2 is not that it now features ads, but it has some minor improvements, which are listed way down, forcing you to scroll to reveal them.)

If you have a specific folder open in a tab in a Finder window, and then, in *another* window, you view the enclosing folder's contents and you right-click on the folder in question and select “Open in a New Tab”, macOS Finder does NOT open the folder in a *new* tab, but… brings the *existing* tab to the foreground. I guess our good old spatial Finder from the very distant past still has a way of rearing its lovely head (and today's Apple couldn't care less about any of...

Is there a single automated phone service out there that is not “currently experiencing a higher than normal volume of calls”? If everyone is currently experiencing a higher than normal volume of calls, it's now the normal volume of calls for everyone. They are basically saying: “We can't be bothered to hire more staff to handle your problems.”

Got this email today from _The Guardian_. 1) No mention of the fact that my current payment method has expired. 2) A click on “Manage My Account” takes me to a page asking me to confirm that I want to continue with the account I'm currenty logged in with. I confirm and… it asks me to log in again. By default the login method uses a one-time code, instead of asking for my password. I have to force it to let me log in with my password, and then FINALLY I am able to update my payment info...

Just got around to installing the macOS 15.7.7 update. As always, Apple doing its best to make it really fun for the user:

Every so often, MS Word takes a notion. Here, double-click-and-drag has stopped working properly. Word only selects the LAST word in the dragging movement when the mouse button is released. Sometimes quitting and relaunching the app clears the problem. It was not one of those times. A complete reboot was required. Probably an obscure bug deep inside macOS that only MS's crappy code is able to trigger. (No other app was affected.) Nobody cares. Sigh.

Kinda awkward, in this day and age, that @bbedit still asks you to enter your serial number manually on a web page in order to confirm your eligibility to upgrade pricing. You'd think they'd have something built into the app itself by now. Also do NOT understand why the payment process forces me to give a phone number. If this is all forced upon them by their payment services provider, maybe they need to change providers.

Hadn't used the TV interface (provided by TiVo, which still exists, apparently) of my local cable provider (Eastlink) for several years. What a pile of crap it has become. It never was great to begin with, but the UI is now a complete mess (and ugly as sin), and there are responsiveness issues all over the place. How can you expect the user to guess that it might take 2 or 3 seconds (sometimes more) for a simple button press to register and actually do something on the screen? It&#3...

Maybe one day someone at Microsoft will realize that using coloured underlined text for BOTH hyperlinks and tracked changes can lead to somewhat confusing results for the user. (And the fact that, when you compare documents, EVERY hyperlink is somehow flagged as having been deleted/replaced even when it is actually unchanged doesn't help either.)

In MS Teams for macOS, if you change the destination for file downloads from ~/Downloads to a folder on an *external* volume, and then you attempt to download a file, you will consistently get a “Couldn't download - No permissions” error — even if you grant Full Disk Access to MS Teams in macOS's Settings. Because of course Apple's security theatre and Microsoft's security theatre are not compatible, and nobody tests anything in real-life situations anymore.

It's rather infuriating that the Bitwarden folks keep revamping the user interface for their stand-alone app, yet never seem to be able to get it right. It's not costing me much, so I cannot complain too much, but… Just to give one example, there is still no keyboard shortcut for the Save button after all these years. (I have to use a @KeyboardMaestro for this.)

Typical of today's Apple to put this once-in-a-lifetime “Updated Time Zone Information” notification with absolutely no explanation whatsoever. Did I ever ask for time zone defition updates? Nope. Have I ever seen one before? Nope. Could I use more info without having to do a Google search for this? I sure could. Whatever…

Exactly how many times does one have to tell Apple one doesn't want anything to do with its opaque, half-baked UX crap?

The fundamental question remains: Why does Apple expect Mac users to turn on “Reduce transparency” under System Settings › Accessibility › Display in order to avoid THIS? In what computing universe is THIS desirable? Who out there is so in love with transparency that they are willing to put up with THIS? Still waiting for a sensible answer.
