Climate diary: For a trip with my son, I drove from Heidelberg to north of Hamburg this weekend. 500+ km straight through Germany. I haven't seen anything like this. This country is bone-dry. Dry grass, dry shrubs, dry trees as far as the eye can see for hundreds of kilometers. It looks a lot like Portugal in summer. Honestly, the only thing I could feel is fear.

We are at a point where urgent emergency planning for future heat events will not happen, because it would undermine the political agenda of the parties that would need to initiate it. The CDU cannot act accordingly because they framed themselves into a corner where the climate catastrophe isn't that bad and AfD talking points are more important and the SPD has completely vanished behind them.

German politician Nico Semsrott has suggested that we give billionaires one year to solve the climate crisis. If they fail to do so, we should dispossess them. I think that’s a wonderful idea! It's never going to happen, but it's nice to dream.

This is a great speech from Mark Carney: https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/mark-carney-speech-davos-rules-based-order-9.7053350 and in my opinion many of us expect exactly this from our politicians: Take the fucking sign out of the window.

I thought for a while if I should post about this at all, but last week I did something that pushed me so far out of my comfort zone that I'm glad I found my way back. A few weeks ago, @marcthiele asked me if I could help @andremichelle with a live demo for his openDAW project: https://opendaw.org/ by playing guitar on stage. I instantly agreed and also instantly regretted it. I play guitar since I'm twelve, I'm in a band for almost 30 years and yet I hated my decisio...

Some people think Mastodon is too weird to become popular: I joined Twitter in 2008. We had to put a "d" in front of a tweet to convert it to a direct message and every other day you had some embarrassing private moments exposed because someone forgot about the “d”. Hashtags were just a community hack, introduced by Chris Messina to somehow tag content. Search? Hah, you wish! Tweets via SMS were supposed to be a thing. Oh, and the daily meet and greet with the failwhale. Tota...

That three main German political parties only manage to leave Twitter, once they manage to coordinate the exit is quite interesting. I think it really shows how much some organisations and political figures are trapped in such networks because of network effects. As long as other meaningful parties or politicians are still around, it's hard to be the first. We need more such group efforts.

The absurdity of billionaires explained in a brillant post by @preya https://mastodon.social/@preya/114768878020251805 "Jeff Bezos is supposed to be worth $237 billion. His wedding cost 50 million dollars. Applying this to someone with an average net worth of $200,000, their wedding would have cost $42. Well, the man didn't actually want to hit the shit out of the place, he was celebrating a small, humble wedding." (freely translated from German)

If you have a dynamic electricity plan and an EV you can make quite a lot of money today by charging your battery at the right time.

I've been to the first @btconf in 2011 and then to almost all following events in the last 15 years. It's no secret that it is my favourite conference and one of the most important drivers for my creative energy and career. Conferences are expensive to visit and it's hard to tell how much effect they can have on you before visiting for the first time. But @btconf is 100% worth it and such events are now more important than ever: https://beyondtellerrand.com/events/dusse...

Our merchant of record for @getkirby Paddle had a fantastic support team for years. Then they switched to a chat bot that served as a firewall before you could still reach them. Then it got significantly harder each time to get through that firewall. The AI chat bot was absolutely horrible and zero useful. Now they've completely deactivated the chat bot and you can only reach them by email. It's incredible how much you can fuck up your professional support in a matter of months.

We use 32 million ha of land globally (ca. 1 Germany) to grow plants for biofuels. This equals 1.400 TWh per year, or 4% of our global energy consumption for transport. If we'd use the same area for PV, we could produce 32.000 TWh per year, already considering the potential yield for the areas where we grow bio fuel plants. For comparison: the entire world consumed 31.000 TWh of electricity in 2024. I love such comparisons. Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQBgNpooCEo

How good is https://walkman.land? 🥰 It's the most amazing trip down memory lane to find my old model from when I was a teenager: https://walkman.land/sony/wm-dd33 I can still feel the push of the buttons when I see the pictures and I hear the motor fast-forwarding, while sitting in the bus to school.
