1/ Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, people across Canada are gathering in remembrance and renewed determination to ensure ours is a country where every child matters. As the late Honourable Murray Sinclair reminded us, “there can be no reconciliation without truth.” But today, the bravely, painfully told truth of residential schools has become a primary target for hate movements, as we saw on the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc reserve. So it’s more important than ever for...

Tonight Yom Kippur begins, the most sombre moment of the Jewish calendar. It’s a time of atonement - a time to grieve those who have been lost, a time to acknowledge and take responsibility for harms we have caused, individually and collectively. For Jewish people, the personal has always been political and the political always personal. This year I'm reflecting on the fact that we failed to do our part to stop an ongoing genocide committed in our name. There are many other fronts where I ha...

The profit-taking for Wall St and Bay St begins immediately! Billable hours already piling up as big banks will skim millions off the sale itself. There's a reason previous Liberal governments looked at privatizing airports and didn't go through with it. Private investors don't want a stake in our public assets to make them better. They’re in it to make as much money as possible for themselves - while workers and passengers pay the price. #cdnpoli #canada #airports #NDP

1/ Privatizing airports is a terrible deal for travellers, workers, and the public purse. Around the world, it has led to higher travel costs, fewer jobs and worse working conditions. Private equity moguls and fund managers love it! Once they’re in, they own a piece of a natural monopoly, and they print money for decades. This is a mistake we do not need to make. The alternative to privatizing our airports is to NOT DO IT. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-ottawa-to-announc...

Tonight I’ll be dipping apples in honey with my family and making fervent wishes for a sweeter year to come. We live in a terrifying time, but there is still much to be savoured, including our freedom to build hope together in collective struggle. Happy Rosh Hashanah to all who celebrate! #roshHashanah

This is the government of Canada’s scientific finding. It is true. It is also a terrible message. Here’s what’s also true: Every tenth of a degree of global warming matters. Every fraction of temperature rise we avoid saves lives, reduces disease, food and water shortages, disasters. That means: Every wind turbine and solar panel deployed Every heat pump installed Every energy efficiency retrofit Every electric bus and vehicle Every job created from all these things… It all matters! Tonight we mourn the loss of a remarkable leader. Joan Phillip was utterly devoted to making life better — for her neighbours in Vancouver-Strathcona, for Indigenous youth, and for working people across the province. She spent a lifetime at the front of the fight for justice. Now, it is up to all of us to carry her powerful legacy forward. I’m sending strength to her partner, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, her family, and everyone whose life was richer with Joan in it. #canada #cdnpoli #bcpoli

I’m thinking about the thousands of people in the Summerland area who are facing the nightmare of having to leave their homes because of wildfires. We're also seeing incredible courage from firefighters and first responders who are putting themselves on the line to protect the people and places we love. They have our deep gratitude. B.C. has now declared a state of emergency. If you’re in the province, see https://www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca/ for the latest updates. #canada #britishColu...

Over the weekend, more than 5,000 British Columbians had to flee their homes in 24 hours, under evacuation from just two of the approximately 130 wildfires currently engulfing the province. https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/carney-moves-to-list-alberta-pipeline-national-interest-9.7295932 #canada #cdnp...

This is the third time in six months that Benjamin Netanyahu has flown through Canadian airspace. Contrary to the GAC spokesperson’s claim, he does not have the freedom to make that decision. Foreign leaders are required to seek permission before doing so. Netanyahu is also wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes. As a member of the ICC, Canada has a duty to arrest him if he enters the country. Has the government been knowingly shirking its responsibility and allowing a w...

In this photograph, PM Mark Carney is touring the Government Operations Centre - the nerve centre that leads the “integrated federal response to all-hazard events of a national interest.” The workforce there has been cut in half thanks to Carney’s public service cuts, from 100 to just 50 workers. In other words, to advance major projects “in the national interest” (like pipelines and military hardware), the PM has slashed the number of public sector workers who coordinate the response to emerg...

Bravo Mayor Chow for taking action to protect Toronto residents from surveillance pricing. It’s time to end this predatory practice before it becomes normalized - yet another daily digital injustice. So far, the Carney government has promised vague action in the future, from a new agency that doesn’t even exist yet. Instead, we need a national ban on surveillance pricing right now. That’s what Premier Wab Kinew has done in Manitoba, what NDP premiers in waiting like Marit Stiles and Claudi...

This contract is clearly designed to enable both Trump's mass deportation campaign, and his move to use ICE to manipulate the midterm elections. But it’s also a reminder of how deeply entwined Canada's elites are with US corporate and government interests. If the Carney government is serious about Canadian economic independence, it should move to block this contract immediately, with new legislation if necessary. Collaboration between Canadian corporations and ICE should be illegal....

Wildfires are getting more and more devastating because of global warming, which is primarily caused by the burning of fossil fuels. Trump won’t say that because he’s in the industry’s pocket. If he wants compensation for the wildfire smoke, he should go after the oil and gas giants responsible. #canada #cdnpoli #trump #wildfires

The announcement of 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods is the latest economic grenade thrown over the border by an out of control President who has lost touch with reality. It is a direct attack on Canadian workers and industries, putting thousands of jobs at risk. And it will drive up costs for American consumers, who like Canadian consumers, are already feeling pain at the pumps and supermarket checkouts because of Trump’s illegal war on Iran. Donald Trump is trying a new, obscure le...

Trump is fuelling a new McCarthyism that is both delusional and dangerous. It’s clearly intended to crack down on Americans who are resisting his anti-democratic agenda: including deadly ICE raids and endless wars of aggression. It’s also a serious escalation of violent authoritarianism from our next door neighbour. Canada’s participation in this spectacle puts progressive Canadians at real risk. It’s outrageous, and the Prime Minister owes Canadians an explanation as to why he’s involving our...

Incredibly brazen for the Prime Minister to boast about the “lasting benefits” of expanding fossil fuel production on a day like today. Record-breaking heatwaves. Toxic smoke engulfing cities and towns. Out of control wildfires forcing entire communities to evacuate.
