The announcement of 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods is the latest economic grenade thrown over the border by an out of control President who has lost touch with reality. It is a direct attack on Canadian workers and industries, putting thousands of jobs at risk. And it will drive up costs for American consumers, who like Canadian consumers, are already feeling pain at the pumps and supermarket checkouts because of Trump’s illegal war on Iran. Donald Trump is trying a new, obscure legal basis for this latest attack. If these tariffs go ahead, we must be prepared to fight them with counter-tariffs and put every dollar behind supporting workers in affected sectors. The Carney government must refrain from more concessions. We are tired of being treated as Trump’s tariff guinea pigs. New Democrats stand with workers, communities and all Canadians in defiance of this newest threat to our economy and sovereignty. #canada #cdnpoli #trump

@avilewis@mstdn.ca fight to pivot away from free trade with the US, they can no longer be trusted and we must redirect imports and exports to build and retool around a domestic economy. Stop buying iPhones, buy only de-googled android from non-US companies, avoid US tech services. Migrate away from Facebook and twitter to mastodon and support alternatives. We should stop trying to integrate with the US and should instead build domestically, we need to grow up and realize we are a large economically diverse country that can survive and thrive with much less US trade if we choose to diversify and build domestically.

  • @avilewis@mstdn.ca if Carney had a brain he would join the EU but no he doesn't have one. He does everything for money, and he doesn't care about minorities anyways. Isn't he a millionaire anyways? #FuckCarney #JoinEU

  • @avilewis@mstdn.ca This is one of those, "Worst person you know makes a good point." Canada isn't doing nearly enough to combat climate change. In fact, we are actively moving backwards. So is Trump and the United States, which is why it is so pathetic that he's attacking Canada for doing what he's been doing since he's been in charge. The NDP needs to hammer home a simple message: It costs more to deal with the results of climate change than it would to switch to a 100% Green Economy.

@avilewis@mstdn.ca are counter-tariffs the best we have? We need to isolate ourselves from the vaguaries of the US insanity. This has to be a long-term solution, not a 'next quarter' fix.
