In today's news, turns out that I have been banned from the local pub for being a witch? The landlord apparently hates what he called 'Glastonbury types' and rails against witches moving into the local area. In fairness, we do have a practicing witch but she's a terf. Then there's someone else who has done 'goddess training' and talks about Pagan stuff a lot. We're on good terms with her and because we dress quite alt, we'...

Enjoying my second playthrough of Cyberpunk 2077 a lot more after I read a couple of articles. The quickhack/magic system is somewhat OP but I imagine it must be what it feels like having a degree in marketing.... You just wander through life, broadcasting poisonous yet somehow infectious memeplexes at people and declaring yourself the winner while everyone showers you with money and opportunities.

@munroe BTW, I saw that you were struggling to retain players. Has that improved at all?

I was reading a blog post about the megadungeon Arden Vul the other day and someone looked at the HQ of one of the major factions and was horrified by the amount of money and magical loot as well as the sheer number of NPCs. The horror was logistics mainly... how do you deal with a faction rocking up with 75 level 2 fighters? What happens when the group finds 153,000 GP. I feel that these questions are what higher-level D&D is mainly about. Not fighting stuff.

New favourite annecdote: Pulp author E. Hoffman Price dragged Seabury Quinn to a New Orleans brothel only to discover that the girls were all Weird Tales readers and that a couple of them were particular fans of the Jules de Grandin stories and decided to give Seabury "one on the house".

Whenever I see people talking about 'progressive patriotism' and reclaiming the St George's Cross I imagine a comparable German conversation in which someone moans about how unfair it is that only Nazis get to adorn their uniforms with the totenkopf. Actually no... It is worse as there have been loads of military groups who have adopted skulls as symbols whereas only bellend racists care about the flag of St George.

Pursuant to my talk earlier this week about academic attempts at engaging with TTRPGs. The designer of the mega-dungeon Barrowmaze Greg Gillespie is a tenured professor and he teaches a course on D&D at a university named after a badger: Apparently it is not going well https://www.ratemyprofessors.com/professor/1109935

It's interesting... I have purchased two self-published books in the last month and they are both really poorly laid out. One I got the other day looks just like the complete guide to Baldur's Gate I downloaded and printed out on the departmental printer in the early 00s. Pretty sure affinity has templates and that you can get commercial versions for not a huge amount.

The one thing we can take from the efforts to repair Michael Jackson's reputation is that Epstein and Saville should have learned to tap dance.

I wrote up some thoughts on the Forge book, the social composition of gaming groups, the role of the GM, and changes in the hobby over the last 25 years #ttrpg https://tasker.land/2026/04/21/where-the-work-happens/

I read a post today about someone wanting to play an OSR game and then cooling on it quite rapidly because the GM presented them with a river to cross and they couldn't work out how to do it. Players moaning about misty-stepping and athletics rolls. Reminiscent of Chris Bissette writing an adventure for an MCDM magazine and editor reporting that it caused a series of TPKs because 5e players just walked into the river because there wasn't a 'pass river' skill.
