It's interesting... I have purchased two self-published books in the last month and they are both really poorly laid out.
One I got the other day looks just like the complete guide to Baldur's Gate I downloaded and printed out on the departmental printer in the early 00s.
Pretty sure affinity has templates and that you can get commercial versions for not a huge amount.

I know you can go all in on that stuff and have catch feelings about the kerning on particular typesets but when someone (like me) who doesn't care about such matters goes 'Yikes... really ugly font and why are your gutters so small?' than something has gone wrong.
