Oh, dearest language learners, if you are tackling learning the genders of nouns in a new language, please start by understanding that "gender" in this case is used as the linguistic term for different *categories* of words. Linguistic gender and social gender are not the same. Linguistic gender is based on conventions of spelling and etymology for the most part (hence the changes from one language to another), is not random, & can be learned systematically. You're welcome. 1/...

Extremely promising research! A single-dose amber codon carrying live attenuated vaccine elicits pan-sarbecovirus immunity and blocks SARS-CoV-2 transmission 'Furthermore, vaccinated and subsequently challenged cohorts failed to transmit the virus to naïve animals, demonstrating a *complete block of onward transmission*' https://www.nature.com/articles/s41541-026-01540-7 #Covid #Covid19 #PublicHealth

Questions for people who control their environmental temperatures with heat pumps (and only people with first-hand experience): 1. What is the optimal operating temperature range for your heat pump? (I.e., lowest temp it operates in efficiently for heating, highest temp for cooling) 2. When you can't use it because temperatures are outside that range, what do you use a back-up heating and cooling alternatives? #HeatPump #Heating #Cooling #HVAC

I'll say this about the Fediverse: at least the company in this particular hand-basket is top tier.

I was looking for #cyclospora outbreak updates, and came across a breathless piece about a public health conference where everyone was eating salads because they aren't bothered so we should all eat lettuce for capitalism and... ...after years of public health professionals,HCWs, epidemiologists, virologists, and other related science experts attending conferences in the pandemic without wearing masks, let's just say this new article did not achieve its intended affect.

I'm coming to realize that in this time of trauma and our current workplace conditions (now there's a Venn diagram), one of my best and probably most under-valued job skills is that I am a great, active, engaged, caring mentor. We're going to need all hands on deck to get the people coming after us through this.

'Our ability to smell is linked to brain health, and losing this sense is often one of the first signs of neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. About 85 percent of people with early-stage Alzheimer’s have problems smelling'. https://wapo.st/4fLVSkb *I don't have a guest link, I am looking for one, if you have one please share. #PublicHealth #Health #BrainHealth #Dementia #NeurogenerativeDisorders #Alzheimers #Parkinsons #Covid19

I'm looking for US cyclosporia outbreak updates, and it looks like Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce may *not* be the culprit: "The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on ‌Sunday that laboratory experts re-reviewed sample results in the Taylor Farms cyclospora investigation and concluded the finding should be considered a false ‌positive." Are we any closet to knowing what is and is not safe to eat? https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/cyclospora-false-positive-taylor-farms-9.72...

I'm looking around for a UPS with good runtime as backup power for my modem in power outages; i.e., not 23 minutes, but several hours. It's frustrating trying to read through fake reviews and AI slop. #DuckDuckFedi, I would love recomendations **from people who know what they're talking about** for A) brands & models or B) reliable info sources/reviews for a UPS suitable for a modem with 7+ hours runtime (my current standard to beat). I'm looking up information on Cyclospora and food safety best practices (as I'm sure are many of you), and I keep reading articles that boil down to: "Wash your hand and practice basic food safety. None of this will protect you from Cyclospora, but you should still do it." Gosh, thanks for all the help. 1/n #Cyclospora #FoodSafety #PublicHealth #Cyclosporiasis

I'm curious about the Canadian TV shows that are known and loved in the Fediverse. What are three Canadian narrative series that you love? 🍁 - Narrative = drama, dramedy, sitcom. Canadian sketch comedy is a whole other discussion. - Limit yourself to 3 -- not laundry lists. - If 3 is too limiting, try 3 you love + 3 you'd recommend (those can be v. different lists!) - Doesn't have to be a definitive answer, off the top of your head is fine, no stress. #AskFedi #TV #Canada #Canadi...

I have questions for people who have a breadmaker machine they use to make gluten-free bread specifically: 1. Does your machine make good gluten-free bread? 2. How often do you actually use it? How did you get into a routine with it? 3. If you have a machine that is PFAS / Teflon / PTFE-free (i.e, with a steel or ceramic insert) that you like, I'd love to know the brand! Replies from gluten-free bakers only please. Ta! #Food #GlutenFree #Baking #KitchenAppliances #AskFedi

Did you know that hypochlorous acid can be used to disinfect water? I have HOCl tablets that I use all the time to make HOCl as a descaler, disinfectant, sanitizer, and for skincare. I'm also glad to know I have it on hand in case of water emergencies. It's a good thing to have in a household emergency kit. #HOCL #HypochlorousAcid #DisasterPreparedness #EmergencyKit

You don't have to spread propaganda and disinformation. You don't have to be a broadcast booster for agendas and messages you disagree with. You can make mindful choices and take responsibility for what you do. You can be a role model in what you do and do not share.

It occurs to me lately how lucky I am to be on Fedi. I don't work in tech (although I have a job in a different sector that includes technical elements), and without Fedi friends I wouldn't know which tools were blowing up, which companies were imploding, etc. There's info here that I do not have access to without Fedi. You make me smarter and keep me safer (in so many subject areas, not just tech / in so many ways). I'm grateful for you all. Thank you.

Friends, if you are in a heat wave, one of the best survival tips I know that I rarely see people talk about is getting a pet cooling mat, the kind filled with gel. - pressure activated - sucks heat out of your body - last 3-4 hours - reset in 15-20 minutes. You can cool them in the fridge but you don't have to. They don't need electricity. They work when the power goes out. Great for heat emergencies & everyday hot weather use. #HeatWave #EmergencyPrep

"Your boundaries have to be stronger than your empathy.” A friend just shared this advice with me, in a conversation about a tough situation she's dealing with, and I wish someone had said this to me when I was very young (instead of implicitly and explicitly telling me the opposite, as is common for people socialized as female). Sharing here for all those (of all genders) who could use to hear it.

"Gardeners often refer to snow as nature’s fertilizer. But why? Like rain, snow captures nitrogen, sulphur and other trace elements as it falls through the air. Unlike rain which can quickly run off the soil surface, the snow slowly releases these nutrients into the soil as it melts. This gives the plants a much needed boost at the start of spring." I am fascinated to learn this! https://bokashiliving.com/discover-how-snow-helps-your-garden/ #Snow #Gardening
