When I first signed up for Mastodon it was scary. Posting our life's happenings meant giving up any pretence of maintaining any level of privacy. I can remember at the beginning of social media, before Facebook, interactions seemed low risk and high reward. Now it's opposite. It didn't take long. Overcoming the fear of bad things to truly connect with this community has restored some of my faith in fellow humans. On Mastodon I've participated in a live stream, mailed embroide...

Summer is a hard working dog. She says she's ready to work to help support her dog treat habit. I don't have the heart to tell her that those jobs are few and far between. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon

While my husband was in the hospital recently he watched lots of television. For some reason one of the few things he remembered from that experience was the commercials. When I would visit he would tell me about the Applebee's ads until I promised that when he was well enough I would help him fulfill his craving for some of the food that never, ever looks or tastes that good in real life. I think the visual contrast to hospital food was significant. He has been able to eat without negativ...

Since I wanted to elevate my knee yesterday I sat to watch the Detroit Tigers win and caught up on my embroidery project. As I promised a towel to a Mastodon friend it felt like an opportunity to sit and sew without feeling guilty for everything that wasn't getting done. This will be the first of a set of two. Sewing makes me almost as relaxed as baking and I consume less calories. Feels like a win. #Embroidery #Sewing

Summer is waiting by the door for the deck builders to show up. I think they are building the stairs today. Very exciting. Breakfast is done. Cooling neck fans are charging because today will be warm for us and the deck builders. No Summer adventure this morning because I stepped back on an uneven surface yesterday and my knee is just unhappy enough that I'm taking a day off from slogging through soft sand. Summer will have to exercise running down the hill and back before it gets to warm...

Summer knows something's up. For a distraction we ran out to the garden to pick a center piece for the table. I rarely pick our flowers unless for a sick friend but today is special.

Our day had a rough start. Lucky for us the VA clinic had some answers and we feel back on track. My husband is perkier than he has been in weeks. What a difference a day can make! Today I managed to get some weed eating done, and dug up six more concrete blocks. Eight miserable blocks to go. The blocks were the base for the posts that held up our old deck. Way heavier than they look. I will move more of them out of the way tomorrow. The deck builders don't come back until Monday. I also...

Kind of a long night and then off to the VA clinic early. They are trying to help us to stay out of the hospital this weekend. Really nice people. The deck builders came early so they could double as dog sitters while we went to town. The deck floor has been installed and the stairs will be built Monday. The redwood for the railings/windbreak sides has been gifted to us and was milled from a fallen tree on a friend's property. We are blessed. The kindness and generosity of our friends a...

Summer is hiding again. I decided to crawl around on the floor to take her picture. Big mistake. Instead of posing or just looking adorable for the photo she dove in to lick my face. She has no self control when one of her humans gets to close. She sees such a maneuver as an open invitation. She is so sweet and brings the joy to our house every single day. I'll survive a few Summer kisses. #Summer #DogsOfMastodon

Summer and I are loving even the hint of a new deck. It's not finished yet. No rail or stairs but we decided to rough it and enjoy the late afternoon view anyway. It will be so wonderful when it's safe for all of us to enjoy our sunsets together. Soon, very soon.

A few more large dahlias from our garden this afternoon. #BloomScrolling #Dahlias

It cracks me up that my husband and Summer are so impressed with the biggest dahlias. We managed to grow another really huge one but the wind took it out today. It was starting to get brown on the back anyway. What a fun happening to follow everyday as the new flowers open up and get bigger, bigger and biggest. We are easily entertained. #BloomScrolling #Dahlias

Summer is exhausted after supervising the deck construction all day. Tomorrow morning the rest of the deck floor will be installed. We can actually step out the door to a solid surface now. So exciting. #Summer

You can't see all of the old dudes who are working on our deck in this photo. All are retired and want to help us get our new deck up. A truckload of materials arrived this morning as well as extra old dudes. The original brothers called in more brothers. There are 12 siblings all together. The decking will be installed today with the rails and stairs next week. My husband is touched by their kindness in finishing his unfinished project. He truly doesn't know how to thank them. In the...

I lost my words yesterday. The day before I was pushing to get so many chores done I logged 20K steps. I was seriously tired. Yesterday morning started out with a grandson dogsitter coming out so my husband and I could go to a doctor appointment together. The deck bros needed for me to choose deck railing and stairs choices and I had to face my deferred housework. It felt like a lot all at once. The doctor was clear that if my husband gets as sick as he did last week I should drive him to San...

A few flower photos from our garden. I tend to focus on the dahlias but the roses deserve some attention too. Living here with our view and our garden is a blessing. Heck just living is a blessing. #BloomScrolling #Roses

All of our lower fields are mowed. As dry as our weather is I'm glad to keep them short. Our middle grandson showed up early to share a bowl of yogurt, fresh fruit and granola with me for lunch before he launched into the marathon mowing of acres project. He is such good company. Summer loves him to pieces. We do too. I gave him some money. He protested that we have done so much for him already and we shouldn't pay him. I explained for the gazillionth time that if I am keeping him fro...

Wild morning. Summer and I were awake at first light. I wanted to get her walk in early. She was excited because she knows something fun is in the works. When I opened our front door to let her out she took off like a rocket. Summer has wheels. It turned out that some deer were pulling the netting off of our roses. Summer wasn't having it because this is her front acre after all. I yelled at her at the top of my voice because I didn't want either Summer or the deer to get hur...

When we met with my husband's surgeon last week he offered a couple of suggestions to help my husband's body recover from massive doses of antibiotics. He asked me to buy a container of Kimchi from Costco and to serve him a fork full once in the morning and once at night. This is a new food group for us. This morning we opened the container. Yikes. I said it can't be that bad. He said ok. You first. The things I do for love. Once. It must be an acquired taste. He and Summer...

Some nights I sleep better than others. Last night I worried instead of sleeping. I know better but it's best to let my brain consider all of the possibilities and then move on again. Since sleep wasn't happening I jumped up at first light to get Summer out for a much needed run. All of our favorite spots were full of people who looked like they were camping. None of these places allow overnight so there's that. We moseyed down the hill to our trail of last resort on Humboldt Bay...

I miss our deck. Summer does too. We all do. The deck bros will be here on Wednesday to build more of the new structure. I dug out the concrete blocks that the old deck was anchored to so they can be moved to hold up the newer version. One more chore off the list. The sunset was lovely even though we watched from the doorway. Today was a good start for our week.

In between lounging and watching a movie with Summer and her pal I baked banana walnut bread mostly for the freezer. I served warm bread with salted butter and raspberry jam for a snack. My husband has gained four pounds now. All this baking is working exactly as intended. #Baking

We have been dilly dallying away most of the day but Summer said the garden was calling her. She promised that she would do most of the work. How could I refuse. Watering got done. Some wire on the gate had come loose and was hazardous so I tried to fix it with zip ties. Didn't hold so I used string. It looks funky but it works for now. We planted a new fushia. Unplanted spent green bean plants to make way for new lettuce and we thinned out the baby apples. Summer did all the fetching a...

Today is one of those days. The three of us are celebrating our good fortune at being together. Feeling pretty good. Flexing our having a good time skills. Eating and drinking all the good stuff without worries about calories or cholesterol. We all deserve one of these days. Today felt like the best time to make a Sunday a special day for no reason other than we can. So we are partying here in our little hillside sanctuary. Lots of smiling going on. Feeling our oats and thankful for each ot...
