I went to Walmart today, and I had to let a man who should be in a retirement home look at my receipt so I could leave, after buying something that needed to be unlocked and carried to the register. I drove down the road, and saw a McDonald's that was basically abandoned, as the entire parking lot was filled with a dozen or so homeless people camping there. Then I get online, and I see a video of a woman being beaten while carrying a get well present, seemingly for no reason. And the gener...

Having been in the NICU for a month now, I think that the nurses there are not all that bad, and the nurse hate I’ve seen over the years is seriously overblown, but maybe it depends on the hospital and the department they are a part of.

I've not read / watched the Three Body Problem. My guess is that it involves aliens deliberately disrupting human achievements in science (I'm assuming one of them being a solution to the real "Three Body Problem" which is actually unsolvable)? People are talking about it again because someone shared a video of some maleware, made in the mid 2000s, that makes it impossible to model spherical explosions when using specific programs (likely to prevent them from making an atomic b...

I learned more about this story today, and it's even funnier. The story everyone is told today is that a Jewish woman, Rosalind Franklin, took the first picture of DNA via x-ray crystallography. The gist of the problem is that things like DNA are too small to photograph, but if the structure is "crystalline", you can infer its structure indirectly through diffraction. Rosalind Franklin took these images, but they were "stolen" from her by Watson and Crick before she had...

This video on why new appliances are so bad was way more insightful than I could have imagined. A few things I guessed (we are buying cheaper things), but the insights from an actual engineer was interesting too. TL;DW: 1) Bad shopping practices: people are buying cheaper and cheap appliances, while demanding more features, creating a race to the bottom in terms of quality. 2) Dumb government regulations: laws demand more complex machines that cost more to design and produce, forcing applian...

I've seen them trying to design a "flag for humanity" recently and every design really is just "we are gay" over and over again. I don't think aliens need to know that we have hands, or that we love each other. The flag of "humanity" should really only reflect the cultures of those who actually explored space meaningfully. It should also serve as a warning to not mess with us, while also inspiring us to face adversity head on...

One of the weird parts of Star Trek is that the Greek gods are real. Like, unambiguously real, and a few even serve in star fleet it seems. Jesus is also real, and apparently performs the same trick on other planets. Then they go around preaching atheism.

I'm rewatching Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. Episode 9 - 'Chat Chat Chat' has it all: pointless internet debates about schizos on the internet, a person who keeps asking for sources anytime he hears something he doesn't like, and doom scrolling while driving. A truly accurate vision of the future from 2004.

I had my 4th ultrasound this morning. One of the babies is like buddha under a fig tree, she doesn't move much. The other is a total spaz. The ultrasound looked like this. Thankfully the doctors still say they look perfect, though they are giving me a bit of whiplash. "This is a super high risk pregnancy, also you are doing amazing, I've never seen test results this perfect before, the babies look S tier."

I talked with my parents last night, and they showed that their ring camera captured a bunch of guys with guns trying to break into their cars at 3 am (a well as the cars of everyone else on their block). I really want them to move but they wont. It's also frustrating because, lets say that I convince them to move, in 10 or 20 years, will that new spot be just as bad?
