This video on why new appliances are so bad was way more insightful than I could have imagined. A few things I guessed (we are buying cheaper things), but the insights from an actual engineer was interesting too. TL;DW: 1) Bad shopping practices: people are buying cheaper and cheap appliances, while demanding more features, creating a race to the bottom in terms of quality. 2) Dumb government regulations: laws demand more complex machines that cost more to design and produce, forcing appliance companies to cheap out wherever they can. 3) Evil companies: They are obsessed with adding as many features as they can to appliances, increasing the complexity of the machines, leading to more points of failures. They prefer all-in-one computers over switches, as they cut costs significantly. They patent circuit layouts of their motherboards, preventing 3rd party manufacturers from making those parts available.
