Might miss the opening of IUCr and the Drumheller excursion due to the forest fires. Only one airline didn't cancel it's flights it today due to the smoke and fires blocking routes. #IUCr2026

For those that don't know: There are edit out of control wildfires in the same lake I live near, one at the north end near Vernon, the other about 26 km from be (far side of the lake, thankfully), and a third they have contained. 20,000 people evacuated last night alone Edit: Three out of control wildfires, I forgot one

Watched a dubbed copy of Captain Harlock YouTube recommended to me today. Wow, that does not hold up. I've heard better acting in local theater. Is it magically better with subs? Is this why there was such disdain for dubs when I started watching?

I really wish Kasts was usable. @kde It looks so perfect, and then you try and use it and buttons keep getting placed offscreen, bars suddenly take up half the screen, and scrolling lists has visible framerate issues :(

Sometimes things blow my mind. First there is an HIV preventative drugs so effective THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO DO MATH to compare it to the control group (No one in the test group got HIV in the first trial. I have never before or since heard of a drug trial that effective. I believe they got something like 98% effective in the follow-up, much larger trial. NOW there is a human trial of an HIV *vaccine* that shows a lot of promise on primate trials.

What is the best place to all Linux questions these days? Is Linuxquestions.org still good? I'm reaching the point where my bugs are getting weird enough that I'm not really getting answers on Mastodon, would love to know what the best place to ask is #linux

MotherFUCK, we've been having an issue with a bunch of boxes of crab shells rotting from a mixture of moisture and heat. The smell was entering the building and making the whole way incredibly unpleasant to be in, so I told the group they need to get those dried out and put into watertight containers. #RealTimeChem

Note to self, never fly with Flair again: They no longer have human support staff and when you call you just get a chatbot that is unable to connect you to a human. They also do not have X gender markers on their website, so I'm having to put in a support ticket to update my husband's booking as both Canada and the US offer X IDs and he has one

"- For openSUSE Linux they are looking at developing an AI-powered onboarding experience for users to deal with "new openSUSE users face a steep learning curve navigating distribution-specific tools like zypper, YaST, Btrfs/Snapper, and systemd." " Guess it is time for me to find a new linux distro. DAMMIT. There is a new version of Nethack out and there isn't an OpenSUSE nethack package OR a flatpack! Nothing under nethack at all in Discover! ....Do I have to compile Nethack-Qt from source myself? @.@ At least it doesn't update very often, so I won't have to do it very often. (Usually less then once update a year) #nethack #OpenSUSE

I hate how much technology is dictating form factor, like SD cards and SIM constantly getting smaller, without realizing that human hands have been the same size for several hundred thousand years and a lot of people have trouble handling things that tiny. CF cards and memory sticks were the right size, SD card was adequate

This is an open invitation to infodump on me about your #linux distro or #BSD distribution, particularly people who use more obscure ones. What is cool about it? Why do you use that one? Does it have a cool history? #BoostsOK

Is there a good way to read a webcomic on Patreon? I recently realized that the reason Aaron Williams isn't updating Full Frontal Nerdity anymore is he moved over to Patreon exclusively (MIGHT want to put a post on your website explaining that!) I can sort posts from oldest to newest, but if I don't read years and years of comics in one sitting, it sends me back to the start. Has anyone got a tool for this?

All right, I am completely uninvolved in this discourse, but from watching all of the posts on my timeline, is it just me or do there seem to be two completely different definitions of purity culture going around? One of them seems to be based on like the culture that gives rise to purity rings and waiting to a marriage and all that And the other seems to be related to leftist infighting and trying to be perfect
