Some people are confused about the terminology, so let me help try to clear things up a bit. "Male" and "female" are adjectives that refer to people of particular "genders". "Man" and "woman" are nouns that refer to people of particular genders. "200 pg/mL estrogen, 20 ng/dL testosterone" is an example of a sex. Or rather, it's a summary of the part of sex that has the most relevance to the most areas of medicine. Note that no...

Professional sports leagues: It might hurt men's feelings to lose to women, so we segregated women into separate and unequal leagues. Sports fans: We don't care, we're going to watch anyways and give you more money. Professional sports leagues: It might hurt cis men's feelings to lose to trans men, so we're banning trans men completely. Transphobes: What if someone lies about being trans, huh? There's no way you'd ever be able to tell. In fact, I think I'll lie about being trans now. I'm trans! Ha ha no I'm not. You totally believed me didn't you? I'm such a highly skilled liar. LLM bros: You can't ban LLM usage. What if someone lies? There's no way you could ever tell. In fact, I think I'm going to use an LLM right now and then lie about it. There, in the past three seconds si...

Holy shit, I stopped paying attention several years ago to the Computer Chess Rating List because Stockfish was dominant for too long. Now Stockfish is still in first place, but by a mere 2 elo points, well within the margin of error. Second place is Pawnocchio, written in Zig by just three people. #Chess #Stockfish #Pawnocchio

For independence day, here's a reminder that the Founding Fathers did not grant slaves 3/5ths of a vote. They gave slaves 0 votes. The Virginia delegates to the Constitutional Convention wanted to give slave-owners an extra vote for every human they owned. They knew that would sound bad, so they concocted the House of Representatives. The House gives states a number of representatives in proportion to the state's population: not the number of eligible voters in the state! Slaves, f...

https://qwantz.com/index.php?comic=4491 Is Batman really the best bat-themed protagonist? There's also the legend of Batboy, the half-human half-bat supposedly living in West Virginia. Danille Corsetto (author of Girls With Slingshots) wrote a print comic series about Batboy, so arguably Batman isn't even the best bat-themed comic protagonist. Batboy also wins in terms of who makes the best musical theater protagonist. Starkid's *Holy Musical B@man is* is good, but Laurence O&#...

A brief summary of depictions of Robin Hood over time: Medieval/early modern depictions: Robin is a working-class socialist hero who aims to kill all rich people and all cops to give wealth to the working class. 19th century depictions: Robin is a commoner who really supports the True King, and he opposes only corrupt nobles and one corrupt cop who aren't loyal to the king. Definitely no ACABing. 20th century depictions: Robin is rightfully a noble who was born rich, but the corrupt prin...

Hi, we're your pharmacy! To confirm your identity, we need to ask you a super secret personal detail about yourself that only you would know. It has to be something you have never shared with anyone aside from us, something you can change if it ever leaks, and something you definitely wouldn't hold a big party to tell everyone about. What's your birthday?

Has anyone made a beginner tutorial on how to use a tiling window manager? I have installed many desktop enviroments and window managers in virtual machines. The stacking ones I can usually figure out. On the other hand, for tiling window managers I constently get stuck on questions like a) How do I open a terminal? b) How do I open applications? c) How do I switch between open applications? None of the tiling window managers I've looked at have documentation that helps. For example, Sw...

"The solution to online ID checks is to stop using any site that asks for IDs!" No, that is terrible advice. Most people have an employer or school that forces them to have a Google, Apple, or Microsoft account. If Google, Apple, and Microsoft start requiring photo IDs, normal people can't just stop using them. If you're self-employed and run your own private email server and have one of the six phones that allows unlocking the bootloader, then what you do is not actionable...

Let me tell you the story of a company, which I will refer to as Company X (I am not talking about Twitter). Company X makes their pitch to other businesses. Their promise is that if your business pays exorbitant subscription fees to Company X, and integrates Company X's software into every part of your business, then it will magically generate profits for you. Company X's software harms every regular human who interacts with it, making the products of Company X's customers wo...

One of the most commonly criticized aspects of Harry Potter is the handling of house elves. For anyone out of the loop, in the Potterverse elves are slaves, owned by rich human wizards. The system of slavery is magically enforced: elves are magically incapable of disobeying their owners. And the "good guys" say this is totally good and ethical. One quirk of the magic system that doesn't get talked about in criticism as often is that, in the Potterverse, elves actually get more...

This is your irregular reminder that the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) contains a section of which explicitly allows health care providers to share your personal medical information in some circumstances. In particular, Standard: Disclosures for law enforcement purposes. A covered entity may disclose protected health information for a law enforcement purpose to a law enforcement official if the conditions in paragraphs (f)(1) through (f)(6) of this section...

Proposal: Replace all uses of the phrase "age verification" with either "surveillance age discrimination" or "surveillance age censorship." Background: If you talk to liberals about misogyny or sexism, they almost all say they are opposed to all forms of sex discrimination, and they say they support laws prohibiting sex discrimination. But if you then ask them about having "sex" listed on government IDs, they get confused. "What's wrong with ha...

I believe the next step in the war on ownership is domain allow-listing. Google and Apple will point out that many websites contain malware. They will claim the only solution is to make themselves the sole arbiters of what websites you are allowed to visit. iOS and Android will each come with a list of approved domains, and will refuse to connect to any domain not on the list. To get a domain approved, the developer will have to provide Google and Apple with government documents, pay a f...

Discord Web has now added an ad in the bottom-left corner. I cannot figure out how to block it (I can manually close it, but it comes back the next time I load Discord). I already tried uBlock Origin's element picker and element zapper. No combination of sliders were able to remove the ad. Is there a way to get rid of it? EDIT: SOLVED by @xerz@soc.masfloss.net . The solution was to go into Discord user settings, select the "data and privacy" tab, and uncheck everything.

In Michigan, Joanna Whaley is a trans woman running in the Democratic primary for Michigan legislature on a progressive platform. Her opponent in the primary, Frank Liberati, is running on a platform of transphobia. U.S. parties do not have any inherent policy positions: they take whatever positions are held by the winners of the primaries. Either Whaley's policy positions or Liberati's policy positions can be "the Democratic" position, depending on who wins. https://ww...

Hello fedi, I am still interested in trying to make tables in geminispace that are accessible to blind users. The trouble is that gemini's native markup format, gemtext, does not have tables. Gemtext does have preformatted text blocks, so I tried making tables by manually lining up text.Header Also a header Thing A thing Another thingbut I was told that that sort of table is hard for people using screen readers to parse. So now I'm trying something else. I made two copies...

Breaking news! The International Olympics Committee has announced that, to ensure fairness, all women's athletics events will be restricted to white women. "The most important thing," said IOC president Kirsty Coventry, "is that the most racist viewers believe that the Olympics is fair." "We tried banning trans women from the women's Olympics, but viewers kept insisting that every black woman who won was secretly trans. Teenagers should be unionized. Collectively bargain with your parents. Collectively bargain with your schools. Collectively bargain with the government. #Unions EDIT: I mean this 100% sincerely. Now that I've worked in a normal school, I still think it's horrifying! The government views tee...
