Its more a of a false sense of security, they must really think they can go down and hide from whatever catastrophe that is occurring and come back up with society waiting with open arms. And as for "rebuilding society" in their own image. They couldn't even rebuild SimCity after a disaster with unlimited money.

@fromjason@mastodon.social the Presidential Emergency Operations Center, aka bunker, was built for FDR during World War II and was located under the East Wing of the White House. It was demolished along with the East Wing to be replaced, since despite upgrades over the years its infrastructure still dated to the 1940s.
