RE: https://social.v.st/@quixoticgeek/116318158240045573 Thread discussing how benches are essential inclusive architecture. Many people can drive, cycle or walk but can't stand for longer periods. It takes a lot more leg strength and complex muscle working arrangements to stand than to walk. I have limited walking AND standing stamina. My nearest shops are in my max good-day walking distance but no benches mean I can't rest part or half way so it's a painful trip when it needn't be. Stations never have enough seating and it's often hostile.

Hostile seating is often not accessible. A seat that requires me to bear weight through my legs isn't a good seat for me. I'm trying to take weight OFF my legs. Something that requires balancing isn't good as my balance is poor.

@NatalyaD Benches were essential to getting me back outside and walking again. Also walls. A good wall you can sit on is a real treat when you need a bench but can't find one. I used to navigate routes by walls and benches so I could sit as needed.

@NatalyaD @otterly_icy @quixoticgeek I’m a LOT better at walking than standing. I lose count of the amount of places I’ve had to sit on the floor while waiting.

  • @NatalyaD My local shopping centre, which is run by literal #Nazis has had most benches removed during #Covid Where groups of aged ethnic men gathered for social interaction... There is a multimedia advertising unit /spit

@NatalyaD After I had a fall and tore up my knee, I was impressed to discover just how much more taxing it can be to stand or queue than to walk.

@NatalyaD this is one of the reasons my mother, who has post-polio syndrome, hardly dares to go anywhere unless she knows she can park close by.
