I can't say I approve of Harvard's new grade cap. First of all, limiting the number of A's to 20% plus 4 is a hack on top of a kludge. Second, it damages academic freedom. Say I am teaching undergraduate quantum mechanics, and I go in with a standard for what I think constitutes mastery of the subject. If 30% or 40% of my students attain that level, I'm being *dishonest* if I don't give them A's. I don't like rules that force me to be disho...

The Connecticut state senate has passed an omnibus-ish bill that includes social media regulations like a mandatory warning label (hella unconstitutional) and various privacy-invading demands. I honestly don't know whether it would apply to fedi instances or not. See section 39 here: https://www.cga.ct.gov/2026/lcoamd/pdf/2026LCO04418-R00-AMD.pdf On the legislative clusterfuckery and general lack of seriousness (they are rushing to finish business by May 6th): https://ctmirror.org/202...

Age-gating the Internet is coming to Massachusetts, too https://malegislature.gov/Bills/194/HD3070 They define a "social media platform" as "a public website, online service, online application or mobile application that displays content primarily generated by users and allows users to create, share and view user-generated content with other users." Gee. That's every fedi instance. And AO3. And Wikipedia. It's backed by our state Attorney G...
