I’m not particularly feminine (I don’t wear makeup, do my nails, wear jewelry/pretty clothes, or shave every inch of my body every day… all I use are lotion and sunscreen) so I feel very weird when I go to Japan and see the blatant patriarchal pressure on women through constant relentless fearmongering masquerading as “advertising”. I don’t know what “being a woman” means, but it’s sure as hell not whatever that is!

  • @agnes Obviously I don’t have anywhere near the same context as you do, but just the little amount I’ve been exposed by watching Japanese and Korean TV makes me… laugh? But in a sad way. “What if you don’t get married!?!” Yes. What if? What? The world is going to burn down? Please tell me, “what” great danger you might imagine will come of that. It’s so often implied, but never actually like, brought through to the logical conclusion. (Not saying that’s unique to Asian culture)

@agnes I only observe this at a distance having never traveled there nor been close to the expat community but even so was shocked to learn the labor participation rate for women in Japan is higher than the U.S. . I can only assume it's due to better child care policies. Then again, they've got a female leader before the U.S. has. (She's seems not great but at least they didn't disqualify her for gender)
