🇨🇦 Confusing Canadian lingo 🤔 🦕 Ogopogo – Canada’s version of the Loch Ness Monster, but with better manners. 🍟 Poutine – Fries, gravy, and cheese curds. Sounds weird, tastes like heaven. 🌬️ Chinook – A magical warm wind that shows up in winter like: “Surprise, it's spring!” 🤼 Kerfuffle – A scuffle, a fuss, or a dramatic disagreement, perhaps about whether milk belongs in a bag or a carton. 🏙️ Trawno – A large city in Ontario where every street is under construction.

  • @MeanwhileinCanada@ohai.social adding 🛣️ THE 401 - A practical joke someone came up with that involved sending every commuter in an urban zone of several million people and a significant amount of international trade through a single road... That's under construction because Trawno

  • @MeanwhileinCanada@ohai.social As far as Poutine goes, if one can't handle the cheese curds, just try gravy on those fries. Back in high school, I'd just get fries with a laddle of gravy. May be high cholesterol, but yum!

  • @MeanwhileinCanada@ohai.social My grandparents lived near Kelowna; every summer of my childhood, I would keep my eyes peeled for that sea creature. Related, it was an exciting day mid-way through said childhood when I learned what palindromes were.

@MeanwhileinCanada@ohai.social I dunno, according to one crackpot making money off my family history, Ogopogo killed my great uncle.

  • @MeanwhileinCanada@ohai.social Suffonsified: Full, satiated. No longer hungry. More pie? No, I am sufficiently suffonsified. Thanks.

  • @MeanwhileinCanada@ohai.social 1: how dare you diss Nessie! She is NOT a Ned! 2: Les Québécois just added cheese to chips & gravy: a northern English staple. 4: not uniquely Canuck.

@MeanwhileinCanada@ohai.social I live roughly on the boundary between where we call it "T'ronno" and "Trawna" and I'm not sure I've ever heard it called "Trawno", the final vowel seems to shift before the initial phoneme cluster. (Also streets not under construction aren't completely mythical, I can usually find one or two every time I visit.)

@MeanwhileinCanada@ohai.social Trawno? That's just as wrong as the full three syllable name. Well, you can use it with foreigners and polite company, but I think of it more as Trawnah. Somehow, it's not even a full two syllables the way I've heard or used it.

  • @MeanwhileinCanada@ohai.social US native, and I’ve used kerfuffle all my life (thanks Canada!) however, with Canadian permission, I’d like to start a kerfuffle about whether milk belongs in a human or not. Innit weird that we’re the only species regularly drinking the breastmilk of other species? — So regularly that we’ve created a whole farming industry around it? Soooo weird! Stoppit! 😅
