@anubis2814 Not sure where you're getting the fear aspect from? All of the people who are still masking - myself included - aren't doing so out of fear: but from one or a mix of things, including community care; ensuring their chronic illness doesn't worsen; taking practical steps to avoid chronic illness; avoiding many of the still getting researched knock-on effects of covid; protecting their children; projecting an unwell loved one and also just enjoying not being sick with *anything* We've done our risk analysis and decided that wearing a mask is akin to wearing shoes and it doesn't bother us at all. Also - I'm in Australia and we have a few waves a year still, and we had a massive flu season over Christmas. It's summer here then. #covidisnotover

@anubis2814 Covid spreads year round. It is estimated that 400 Million people are dealing with Long Covid in some form. People are getting (re)infected with Covid in the present tense. People are developing Long Covid in the present tense. Asymptomatic infection is a thing. You have no idea who is infected and who is vulnerable at any given moment. Consider updating your risk analysis. https://www.covidsafescouts.com/covid.html https://ohai.social/@thatkatharine/115874081982256258 #CovidIsNotOver

@anubis2814 Okay, let’s look at airborne viruses in general. Are you interested in reducing transmission or simply minimizing/dismissing them all as “well, at least you probably won’t die immediately if you got vaccinated”? Because there’s a whole bunch of viruses that can spread via shared air—and not just during winter—and to combat them means filtering the air via respirators and ventilation/filtration as well as free access to vaccines. https://letsair.org/documents/2-81_UK_letsair_airborne_diseases.pdf

@anubis2814 Fact checking this a bit, COVID continues to cause more deaths than the flu down here https://aus.social/@DenisCOVIDinfoguy/116156731875690195, and there's not a clear seasonality in the COVID spikes, particularly compared to the same plot for the flu, which has a yearly spike on the same week. @leechindustries@zeroes.ca

@anubis2814 I'm sorry, but some of the things you say are factually incorrect (morbidity vs. flu, self innoculation, ... ). And some of the other replies have already called it out. Noone asks anyone to mask all the time. But masking does work. And it does work, as you say, for any airborne disease. And it's not an all or nothing choice, which I think you also mention. I masked for the last 4 years, and, I've been thoroughly enjoying never getting sick. This rocks, particularly when everyone wonders why they're sick all the time. You're welcome to make your own choices, but please don't misrepresent facts to make yourself feel better. @leechindustries@zeroes.ca

@anubis2814 @leechindustries@zeroes.ca I’ve seen arguments like this a few times before. Someone with long covid points out the imbalance put upon them by those who are ignoring the risk. Their having long covid, and trauma from that, is then taken to somehow invalidate what they’re saying. Of course they’re traumatised. Most people would be. It doesn’t make them wrong.
