@dave There are plenty of projects using C++, especially in the #KDE ecosystem, which is almost entirely such. I haven't seen Calligra mentioned yet, KDE's office suite, which could perhaps use your skills https://calligra.org/ #cpp #cplusplus

@dave Ok, a very long shot for back end processing at home: how about developing privacy for real time smart meter values? After retiring I learned Rust working on that in NL, see my bio here. At the moment I am making a presentation for this, so check back in a month or so for an intro on how this can work on the energy markets.

@dave Hey Dave, I’m assembling an open-source team (6 people so far) to build tools that let organizations (public and private) run parts of their business more democratically - basically adding collaborative decision-making tools into their digital infrastructure. We think OpenDesk (https://www.opendesk.eu/en ) is a promising foundation for this kind of adoption, so our plan is to implement compatible modules and integrations that make it trivial for schools, NGO's, councils, and companies to enable democratic workflows just by following the current trend of making their digital infrastructure more independent from big US-Companies. Hit me up if this sounds interestng to you - were pretty much at the beginning of our adventure (narrowing down our project ideas to pitch them to funding organizations) and would appreciate your point of view and expertise going forward. Also, we have two UX-Pros on board so you really would not have to worry about anything in that regard :P

@dave There is a big need for: - Making it easier for people to migrate from Windows and US apps to FOSS, so an install package that does the whole migration for non-technical users would be huge - Creating local server software for the devices that currently want to phone home to a corporate rent-seeking system, would be amazing - so being able to still run your solar panel, car, vacuum cleaner, fridge, washing machine - without your data being sent to the manufacturer etc

@dave I am in a similar situation and have decided to work on a variety of projects, some just for learning and fun and some to make a contribution. My personal passion is improving the accessibility (#a11y) of apps that are job critical. I am starting with #Wireshark which I have contributed to in the past. I don't have a particular project to suggest but perhaps consider the social causes you want to support beyond the particular tech that might be used.

@dave As I understand it, Rust is probably the skill to acquire then, because it's memory-safe and hence becoming increasingly popular. Although I think it's mostly being used at the kernel driver level in Linux currently rather than app level, but I guess take a look and see what you find that looks interesting to you 🙂

@dave Have you already got recommendations to check out what's happening at FOSDEM and see if any current projects spark your interest? Recordings of most of the talks will be made available online, and you can track here (https://review.video.fosdem.org/overview) when they're ready if you identify talks from the schedule (https://fosdem.org/2026/schedule/) that look promising. I imagine you could find enough interesting projects for several more careers!

@dave A thing I wish existed, which might, but I haven't found it... A Libre Office program that would handle MIcrosoft OneNote 2010 files completely, with no use of any off-site storage. Because none of the Linux note taking programs I have tried are as usable...

@dave my take of the current state: in general, rust is an interesting language. As a long-time dev C++ dev you'll run into the borrow checker because of the extra rules it imposes, which you aren't used to, but makes more constraints enforcible early on. Alternatively, Zig is gaining traction, for not imposing excess restrictions (could be a loss) but instead making everything explicit incl. heap allocations. Larger projects usually benefit from having few surprises. In case you're curious.

Guile needs people proficient in C++ and Windows to integrate the Lilypond patches cleanly and get the Windows version to work well (and the JIT there fast).
